Christian Science Committee on Publication for Illinois Reports

Mrs. Eddy has written in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany'" (p. 128), "Christian Scientists abide by the laws of God and the laws of the land; and, following the command of the Master, they go into all the world, preaching the gospel and healing the sick." And Isaiah records (54:2), "Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes."

We are grateful to report that erroneous statements regarding Christian Science are appearing less frequently in newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals edited in Illinois. Eleven such items were corrected by correspondence or other contacts during the past year. Without exception the authors of the misstatements became cordial and co-operative. The editor of one of the leading religious publications wrote as follows in answer to our request for a correction: "I appreciate the courtesy with which you write. With all my heart I thank you. It is so easy for matters like this to become subjects of contention instead of matters of understanding."

Excerpts from our Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly were sent to newspapers for current publication. During the past year many Illinois newspapers were suspended owing to the shortage of paper; also, newspaper space has been limited. However, the number of newspapers in the state accepting these weekly excerpts numbered about two hundred. Expressions of gratitude for them were received.

Brief quotations from well-known writers, always including one from Mrs. Eddy's writings, were sent regularly to approximately one hundred and thirty publications. Some editors wrote us direct, requesting that their names be placed on our mailing list to receive these interesting and stimulating literary gems.

Reports of the Annual Meeting were printed in one hundred and ten Illinois newspapers.

Other items included advertisements of The Christian Science Monitor in local newspapers in exchange for which the papers received subscriptions to the Monitor. The initial contacts with the editors were made by this Committee through the aid of the Assistant Committees. The number of favorable responses increased, and many expressions of gratitude were received regarding the outstanding features of the Monitor. It is interesting, but to be expected, that these subscriptions are renewed year after year, proving again the wisdom of the plan and the mutual benefits derived.

Many newspapers printed, in whole or in part, reports of Christian Science lectures. In addition, many excerpts and articles from the Monitor were republished in local newspapers, with due credit given our newspaper.

Statements appeared in the press relating to church dedications, building plans, and Christian Science Wartime activities. Three Christian Science Societies took the progressive step of becoming branch churches. Interesting publicity appeared in the respective newspapers.

Radio programs were broadcast throughout the year from five Illinois stations.

A new law "to provide" for the health, physical education and training of pupils in the public schools. State Teachers' Colleges and State Normal Universities" went into effect July 1, 1944. Under this law physical examination of all pupils in public elementary and secondary schools is authorized. But the law contains an exception of which Christian Scientists may take advantage.

On invitations of several of our churches, the Committee on Publication gave addresses relating to the activities of this office.

Invitations from groups of non-Christian Scientists, asking the Committee to address them on the subject of Christian Science, were received and accepted. The acceptance of these invitations was approved by The Christian Science Board of Directors.
