Nineteen years ago, after two...

Nineteen years ago after two physicians had diagnosed my difficulty as "valvular leakage of the heart and weak, infected lungs," and had said, as I learned later that my condition was hopeless, Christian Science came to me with its healing message about man's true relationship to God. I am a living witness to the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 425), "Correct material belief by spiritual understanding and Spirit will form you anew."

Up to that time human experience had led me to believe that because tuberculosis had prevailed in our family for at least two generations, I was unwelcome in society. When I was seven years old I was invited to attend a party given by one of my playmates. It was my first party, and it seemed like a dream as we sat in a circle around the room waiting to be greeted by our little hostess's mother. On learning that I was the daughter of the man at the end of the block who was supposed to have consumption, she hastily ordered me from the house.

As time went on I married and had two children. My husband was completely healed in Christian Science of black erysipelas. Our son, whose employer insisted upon his being examined by a physician when he was seized with sudden pains while at work, was advised to have an immediate operation for appendicitis. They sent him to a second physician, who diagnosed the condition as acute. He was at the time a Sunday school pupil, and he told his employer that his parents were Christian Scientists and would not consent to the operation. He was advised that he need not return to work unless this was done. It was during the depression in the early thirties, and jobs were very scarce, so the boy insisted that I consent to his seeing a third physician.

By this time I had called upon a Christian Science practitioner to help me clear my thought. Through this work I was able fearlessly to cosent to further examinations. One was made by a county hospital physician, who made immediate preparation for the operation. My son refused to be operated on there, another proof to me that each delay was the result of God's ever-present care. When we finally reached the fourth physician, both the boy and I were perfectly calm. Laboratory tests were made in addition to the regular examination, and we were informed that I should be called within two days and be told the results of the final examination. When this call came, the verdict was that the boy was perfectly well. To prove the completeness of the demonstration, our son went back to work and no more was said by his employer about having an operation.

The healings have been permanent, and these experiences only serve to increase my sincere gratitude for freedom from fear, an understanding of eternal life, and an eager desire to live in accordance with the law of God, good. Several years after my healing took place I was obliged, for business reasons, to undergo a complete physical examination. There was nothing wrong. Our son and daughter, who have both completed their time in the Christian Science Sunday School, are in splendid health. Our four grandchildren are free from any sign of that dreaded malady, and I can truly testify that Christian Science has healed and stopped it.

It is with unbounded gratitude that I have proved true the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 145:4), "One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts."—(Mrs.) Anne Adams, Chicago, Illinois.
