Proper Timing under Divine Guidance

A businessman , becoming impatient at being delayed by traffic, found himself thinking, "I must hurry; my time is limited." Quickly recognizing that this sense of impatience, hurry, and limitation was wrong, he set about definitely to correct his thoughts through the application of Christian Science regarding this common occurrence.

He recalled the definition of "time" in the Glossary of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which reads in part (p. 595): "Time. Mortal measurements; limits, in which are summed up all human acts, thoughts, beliefs, opinions, knowledge; matter; error." Was his need for more time? he reasoned. No, positively not! He did not need more limits, more matter, or more error. Then what was his need?

His attention was attracted to his automobile. How smoothly it ran! Regardless of the speed at which it was driven, each part functioned perfectly, without friction. Every movement was properly timed. Timing! That was the answer. He needed a better sense of timing, which to him meant the God-given ability to be at the right place at the right time, and to think and say the right thing when needed, without hurry, confusion, or waste of thought or effort.

He prayed earnestly for spiritual understanding. His prayer included both definite denial of the erroneous claims of material sense and specific realization of the spiritual counterfacts as they were revealed to his grateful and expectant thought. As he gained a better sense of timing, his activities became more co-ordinated. His calls and appointments coincided with the requirements of others; and he was more alert to discern and clearly present ideas as they were needed, with the natural result that his business affairs were conducted more wisely and efficiently than before. He no longer limited or measured his progress by time. Indeed, time was demoted in rank so that it became his servant instead of his master.

"God is the fountain of light, and He illumines one's way when one is obedient. The disobedient make their moves before God makes His, or make them too late to follow Him. Be sure that God directs your way; then, hasten to follow under every circumstance." These statements by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, made in an address on the subject of "obedience" before the Christian Scientist Association of the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, in 1893 (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 117), indicate that she recognized that without divine guidance there cannot be proper timing, even though the word "timing" was not then in current use. He who is spiritually alert and obedient is always where God directs him to be, doing God's work, and bearing witness to Him. Proper timing is the result of obedience.

In the divine economy, every idea, from the infinitesimal to the infinite, is perpetually under the control of and obedient to Principle, fulfilling the purpose for which it is created. Each idea emanating from the divine Mind is always in its proper relationship to every other idea. The cosmos of the divine Mind is the antipode of the chaos of mortal mind.

Man, then, the highest idea of God, good, is always in his rightful place in the divine Mind, under the direct control of the undeviating law of Love. He is always obedient to divine guidance. Over-action, underaction, diseased action, waste, hurry, uncertainty, and delay are all contrary to divine law. These elements of imperfect timing are unknown to the perfect divine Mind. Therefore they cannot be known or experienced by man, who, as the manifestation of God, cannot know that which is unknown to God. A clear realization of these facts heals sickness and sin as surely as it heals discordant business conditions. "Immortal Mind, governing all," Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 427), "must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual."

Those serving in the armed forces of the United Nations and those furthering the war effort in other capacities may feel assured that when it becomes necessary for them to seek normal peacetime employment, God's law of adjustment, scientifically applied, will enable them to demonstrate with proper timing the spiritual facts relative to employment. Each has the ability to prove that, as an idea of God, he is always in his right place, fulfilling the purpose for which he was created—to manifest and glorify God, good. Man is in reality never unemployed.

All may depend implicitly upon the promise made by the Way-shower in behalf of the Christ: "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" (John 14:2, 3). The Christ ever goes before us, preparing the way for us. Love is ever present. Every mansion, or spiritual dwelling place, provided by divine Love is furnished with all that one needs for his well-being. We can be placed in no situation, here or hereafter, where the healing, guiding, and sustaining Christ, Truth, will not find us and abide with us, if we are obedient and receptive.

Even those who are beyond the scope of our limited vision are not beyond the cognizance of the divine Mind. They, as well as you and I, are, in reality, living, moving, and having their being in God, good, progressing spiritually under divine guidance.

Time, as a means of measuring and limiting mortality, diminishes in the ratio that mortality is overcome and spiritual ideas take the place of human beliefs and opinions. The Revelator visualized as a present possibility a heavenly state of consciousness, in which the abundance of man's life is measured in terms of spiritual ideas. And he also prophesied (Rev. 10:6), "There should be time no longer."
