Sunday School Observations

Two young boys from a military school, pupils in a Christian Science Sunday School, greeted their teacher one morning with this remark: "We are dreading tonight, for this is the night of our gym show and we are afraid we will make some mistakes."

The teacher endeavored to clear their thought of fear by reminding them that the truth they had been discussing in class could overcome their fear and bolster their confidence in their God-given ability to think and act rightly.

The first portion of that day's Golden Text, which was from John 16:32, "I am not alone, because the Father is with me," took on new meaning for these boys as their teacher tried to show them how it could be applied to their present problem. Some valuable time was spent in reviewing all the synonyms of God which they had learned and by substituting one and all of them for the word "Father."

The boys left the class joyously repeating the Golden Text as they put it in their own words: "I am not alone because Mind is with me. I am not alone because Love is with me. I am not alone because Principle is with me. I am not alone because intelligence is with me."

The following Sunday brought the expected report that the gym show was a success and free from any mistakes on their part.

These boys were escorted to Sunday school by a sergeant two years their senior. In addition to his sergeant chevrons he wore loops of gold cord around one arm. It was explained to the teacher that this cord denoted honors in scholarship. Asked by the teacher why the boys in her class did not work for such honors the boys replied: "Oh, he is much smarter than we are. We'll never get scholarship honors."

Here was the opportunity to remind the boys that they knew what real intelligence was and from what source they too could obtain it, for they had proved it just the week before. The boys seemed to grasp in a small degree at least the spiritual fact that infinite intelligence was available to all, because all were in reality the children of God.

This discussion was followed through the next Sunday, when the teacher, after giving prayerful thought to the problem, had the class read with her Ephesians 6:1-18, dwelling especially upon verse 9, "Neither is there respect of persons with him." Through this reading the class seemed to obtain a little fuller meaning of the Commandments and a keener appreciation of their practical application to everyday life.
