Through my study of the Bible...

Through my study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, God has healed me of many discordant conditions, for which I am deeply thankful.

I first heard of Christian Science when I was a young girl. Later, while a student nurse in a hospital, I was invited to and attended a Christian Science lecture. After I had practiced a number of years as a registered nurse, Christian Science was again presented to me. Thus, a little later, at a time of extreme pain and injury to a knee, caused by a hard fall, I naturally turned to God, not only for healing but also to gain a fuller, holier concept of Life, God. The patient I was caring for at the time insisted upon my having a doctor and I did, but the knee became more painful after his treatments. The wife of my patient, a class-taught student of Christian Science, lent the textbook to me, and I read avidly every possible moment; she also related experiences and healings to me which I drank in eagerly.

After a few days I dismissed the doctor, although physically I was no better, and stood firmly for Truth, since which time I have never employed any material remedies. The healing of the injured knee was slow but permanent. Later I discovered that I had been healed of constipation and a desire for intoxicants while this healing was taking place.

I am thankful for the wonderful friends and for the practitioners who have so generously encouraged and helped me in my rise Spiritward, and for the years of loving, enriched service I have experienced as a Christian Science nurse. I am very thankful also for a continued abundant supply when I changed suddenly and harmoniously from medical nursing to Christian Science nursing.

In 1939 I was privileged to attend the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church and to visit points of interest connected with the life and work of our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy. This was indeed very inspirational.

To the loving practitioner who assured, comforted, and guided me on to higher thinking and revelation at a time of extreme fear on the discovery of a growth in the mammary gland, I am truly grateful. After discovering the condition, I took my stand unwaveringly for Truth, even while my mother pleaded with me to consult a fine surgeon.

I was called many miles away that day on a nursing case. The patient was very ill with pneumonia. Within a week the patient and I were both healed. As our Leader writes in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 1), "And rest assured you can never lack God's outstretched arm so long as you are in His service."

I am also thankful that early in my study of Christian Science the cigarette, coffee, and tea habits were overcome.

For the spiritual ideas that have guided me in manifesting an increasingly fuller, richer sense of home and companionship I am deeply grateful to God. For Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, for the Church Manual, for membership in The Mother Church, and for membership and activity in a branch church, for our Reading Rooms, our librarians, organists, soloists, and Readers, and for all our periodicals that are blessing mankind, I am very truly and humbly grateful.—(Mrs.) Mary J. Owens, Newark, Ohio.
