Spiritual Understanding Is Supply

[Of Special Interest to Children]

A Little girl came home from school one day bubbling over with joy. She was so happy that she could hardly wait to tell her mother the good news. The music teacher had told the class that morning that those who wished to take lessons on an instrument could do so, and that if they could provide their own instrument the lessons would be free. "So, Mother," said the little girl, "all I need now is a violin." Later that evening the little girl approached her father, asking him if he would get her a violin and telling him of the opportunity.

His only answer was, "Why, honey, a violin is the last thing we need around here." This was during the depression, and the child, having been answered in this way about other things, just kept her counsel and went to her room, not to pine or cry, but to talk to God about the situation, as she had been taught to do in the Christian Science Sunday School.

She had learned about the life of Jesus, and knew that it is a living example for us. She had learned the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5: 3—12), and had been taught that it is necessary to love as the Master loved if we would do the great works that he did. She had learned that the path is straight and narrow; that each must travel it alone; that each must do his own studying and practicing. She had learned also that God is the source of all good, and that man, being His image and likeness, can claim and demonstrate the spiritual qualities which belong to him by reflection.

While she was pondering these truths learned in Sunday school, she recalled an advertisement she had seen in a magazine, some time before, offering prizes for anyone selling a certain amount of merchandise. Investigating this, she found that one of the prizes was a violin, to be given to anyone who sold sixty dollars' worth of assorted goods, spices, and so forth. She ran to her mother, who, understanding her great desire, not only allowed her to try, but gave her the first order to help her get started.

It was too late that night to take any more human footsteps, so she again went to her room to do some quiet thinking. She picked up the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As she did so, she remembered reading about our dear Leader and the struggles that she had had, and she felt very grateful for her and for the textbook. Then she found on page 454 these words: "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action." While pondering this statement she fell asleep.

Next day, on awakening, she felt buoyant and joyous. She was the busiest little girl in that part of the country, going from house to house taking orders. Needless to say, after a few days of rather hard but joyous work, she reached her quota, sent for her violin, and was soon taking the promised lessons. This again proved to her that God, Mind, was indeed her true source of supply, furnishing her with right ideas and the intelligence to carry them out.

This student of Christian Science did not falter then, because she had an objective and a right motive, and she did not falter later when faced with a severe physical problem, for she had learned to keep the high goal always before her. She found that as she studied to learn more about God, she learned more about man as God's child, His image and likeness.

As she strove to know man as the image and likeness of God, as His expression, idea, and reflection, she was healed of curvature of the spine, and was helped in her work as a school teacher. As she consistently and continuously put off material beliefs and put on purity, her efforts were blessed, for with each freer step she visualized more of God and His love. Thus is dominion manifested, practically and naturally, through the spiritual-mindedness that recognizes man's eternal sonship with divine Mind.

We shall find the kingdom of heaven within us only in the degree that we are willing to lay aside sick, limited, proud, or fearful beliefs, and entertain the true facts of being. Heaven is not a place; it may be found where we are, because it is a state of consciousness. As our Leader says on page 261 of the Christian Science textbook, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."

As flowers express beauty and fragrance; as the sunbeam brings light and warmth to all, so we must constantly give of our rich overflow, of our heritage of good, for, as stated in one of our hymns (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 182),

They cause to have who cease to give:
Such is the law of Love.
