I began the study of Christian Science...

I began the study of Christian Science in 1903 after a dear friend presented my mother with a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

For many years I was employed as a bookkeeper and wore glasses attached to a chain which, in turn, was attached to an automatic winding device. Thirty-five years ago, while I was using the telephone, the chain on my glasses caught on the telephone and the automatic winder went into action, jerking the glasses off. The glasses struck my face just below the right eye, cutting the skin slightly. I continued working and gave no thought to the small cut. Several days later my face became slightly inflamed, painful, and unsightly.

Although I asked help of a Christian Science practitioner, I also consulted an eye specialist who told me that I had a virulent form of facial cancer.

My healing in Science was slow, but progress towards harmony was steady. Daily study of the Bible and Science and Health occupied all my time. Much was gained from reading this verse from the Bible (John 4:24): "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth," and Mrs. Eddy's statements on page 180 of Science and Health: "When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible. The only way to this living Truth, which heals the sick, is found in the Science of divine Mind as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus."

Then came the day when I realized I was healed, and, much to my joy, I received an additional blessing. No longer was it necessary for me to wear glasses.

My recovery was complete. I am very grateful to God that I am active and can study the Lesson-Sermon daily and read our periodicals at the age of ninety-three, without glasses.

I am very grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church and for class instruction.—(Miss) Lucy Abell, Peoria, Illinois.
