Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me in answer to my sincere desire to gain an understanding of God. I have never ceased being grateful for those first truths which were pointed out to me in the Bible and Science and Health, and that I was ready to use them. I have had many proofs of God's protecting care, and I should like to express gratitude for the unfoldment of a scientific truth which was expressed to me in a time of need.
I had gone to a city about two hundred miles from home to attend a summer term at a state normal school, and was among strangers. Before enrolling I fainted and fell, causing a spinal injury. I did not realize the seriousness of the injury until evening. Fearful of not being able to attend school. I asked my landlady, who was a more advanced student of Christian Science, to help me. She said to me. "God's child could not fall." I did not understand that statement, but I had asked her for help and accepted it as the truth. I retired for the night, realizing truths from the Bible and Science and Health which I did understand.
By morning the fear was gone, and although I suffered considerably for several days I was able to attend classes and go about with joy and gratitude. In about two months I was completely and permanently healed.
This same healing truth brought me release from suffering about twelve years ago. One Sunday morning, as I held the storm door open waiting for my husband, a gust of wind came against the door with such force that I was thrown down violently. My husband helped me into the car, and for a while I was unable to sit up alone. By the time we arrived at the church I was able to take my place in Sunday school; and by the time I was ready to take up the Bible story and its practical application I had prepared for the class, I was comfortable. The pain returned after I reached home, so I spent the afternoon reading a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel. Then the angelic message, ' God's child could not fall." came to me, and this time I understood it. I was instantaneously and permanently healed.
In October, 1941, during the early part of the week in which the Lesson-Sermon, "Probation after Death," appeared in the Christian Science Quarterly, I found myself so disturbed I could read only one or two sections at a time. Nevertheless I studied the whole Lesson each day, and asked a Christian Science practitioner for some help with it, which was graciously given. Five months later, while ill for several days, I had a great urge to do some studying with the use of the Concordances to our Leader's writings. I spent several hours studying the topics, "God is All," and "God is All-in-all." Then I went to bed, realizing with gratitude that I had been healed.
I had just turned out the light when the message was brought to me that my mother was seriously ill. I sought help for myself from a consecrated practitioner who had helped me many times. I went to sleep grateful that my mother was with those she loved and that my own healing made it possible for me to go to her. I was too full of thankfulness for grief to find me. The next morning I went to my mother's home, a drive of about four hours. The hymn, "O gentle presence" (Poems by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 4), which I sang several times on the way, brought me much comfort. Although my mother had passed on before I reached there I saw clearly that she was still living, but in another state of consciousness. I also realized she had awakened to the fact that there is no death.
During the next three and a half days my thoughts were filled with the consciousness of Life and reality. On the morning of the fourth day I realized my healing of grief was complete. Previously I was so nearly overwhelmed by a sense of human sympathy when I saw another in tears that I could not speak; but now I realized that because in reality there is no death, there is no cause for grief for me, or for others. John's words. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain," were a source of great comfort.
I am profoundly grateful to God, to Christ Jesus, and to Mary Baker Eddy for giving us the truth in a way that we can understand it; also to each one who has helped me better to understand God and my relationship to Him. —(Mrs.) Leta Fern Miller, Detroit, Michigan.
