Our Peace Pact

A Contributor to Christian ideals writes: "A new world order, to be worthy of the name, is something born, not made. It is something that lives and breathes, something that needs to be developed in the minds and hearts of men."

The demands of a new world are upon us. Statesmen and journalists, military, political, and religious leaders, are definitely seeking a way through the present mental and physical upheaval. This would indicate that St. John's prophecy in Revelation is pushing towards fulfillment. He declares, "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 269), "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." Christian Science for nearly three quarters of a century has been exchanging "the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." How well it has succeeded is shown by today's demand for a more spiritual way of conducting the affairs of men.

What is bringing about this new order of things? A desire for genuine good. What is guiding the thoughts of men to the point of demonstration? Nothing short of God's love, which the Christ has revealed, and which is being reflected in the hearts of men everywhere. It is evident to all that the happiness and well-being of a new world require the attention and prayers of the whole human family. If the ambassadors of world peace are to succeed, there is but one pattern for them to follow— the pattern shown in the Mount.

Mrs. Eddy, the revered Leader of the Christian Science movement, states (ibid., p. 174): "The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the ages, rebuking in their course all error and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven on earth. Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised." Mrs. Eddy was at all times interested in humanity's endeavors to promote better world conditions and she encouraged them, but she relied wholly upon prayer and spiritual demonstration to accomplish her purpose. In days of world crises she urged her followers to unite with hers their prayers that the wisdom and power of divine Principle might govern.

The warfare that faces men today is not being fought or won on material battlefields alone. Our goal is the kingdom of heaven, here and now, and can be reached only in the consciousness of men. The hour has struck when higher thinking is demanded, and Christian Scientists need to watch that they are not deflected from their course by the desire to nurse and cater to mortal belief and its mesmeric, selfish materiality. The leaders of a postwar peace must call upon God, divine Mind, to direct their thinking. Material plans are inadequate. If one would make peace for the world, he first needs to find peace within himself.

The terms of universal peace were presented nearly two thousand years ago by the meek and lowly Nazarene. If one would follow Jesus up the mountain (a higher state of spiritual consciousness) he will find the way of blessedness. The first step up the mount of holy resolve is the striving to be "poor in spirit." humble in the estimation of oneself, so that he may recognize his need of spirituality. Meekness and mercy further outline the pattern. Purity discerns the likeness of Spirit, and this must be attained if one would be a world peacemaker. In a further study of the Christliness of Jesus' precepts one learns to demonstrate the equality of man. Hunger for righteousness must accompany those who follow this pattern.

Christ Jesus declares that to love those who love us brings no reward—even the publicans do that—but if we desire truly to be children of our Father in heaven, we shall love our enemies by seeing them as they are in God's sight; we shall do good to them— yes, even more—pray for them. Thus we shall lay up for ourselves treasure in heaven.

Mrs. Eddy recognized the need for contemplation of the allness of Love's presence until the limited sense of personality and nationality disappears. Against a consciousness of Love's presence the winds of superstition, trickery, envy, malice, revenge, jealousy, and duplicity cannot prevail.

When Christian society embraces this state of thinking—the consciousness of Love's presence and control—men will be able to prove that there is one Father, one Mind. Mind expressed in all true individuality remains forever One all in One and One embracing all. God's ideas, reflecting the one consciousness, constitute the image of universal Mind. As thought approaches the spiritual understanding of God, man, and the universe, one begins to realize that the great I AM is the center and circumference of man and the universe. In the realization of true individuality we see God face to face. No sick or sinful illusion ever intrudes upon divine Mind, nor can it intrude upon its reflection, man. Divine Mind, the Mind of man, does not misunderstand itself. Therefore, it is possible to prove that treachery, disloyalty, misrepresentation, confusion, and misunderstanding do not exist. In the presence of Love's allness there is no forgotten man or nation, and there can be no state of inequality in the perfection of divine Principle and its reflection, man.

Throughout the ages Christ, Truth, has appeared whenever and wherever the thoughts of men were ready to receive it. The opportunity now appears for Mind's government of the universe to be seen and applied in the universal government of men. Unless the agreement of the United Nations is based on the First Commandment and the Sermon on the Mount, unless the aim of this agreement is to do unto others as we would have them do unto us, both in the letter and in the spirit —it will avail nothing. Until the motives of men honor God, their achievements will stand for nought. The wise man said, "When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." If the postwar peace plans are to be universal and final, they must have as their object the purpose to serve no lesser power than the divine Principle of all being.

Coming events will certainly be influenced, if not shaped, by the mental atmosphere of those who formulate this plan. Let Christian Scientists seize this opportunity and accept the responsibility of helping to purify and uplift universal thought, that by their mental work they may contribute to the accomplishment of world peace.

In a poem entitled "The New Century" our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes (Poems, p. 22):

"'Tis writ on earth, on leaf and flower:
Love hath one race, one realm, one power.
Dear God! how great, how good Thou art
To heal humanity's sore heart;
To probe the wound, then pour the balm—
A life perfected, strong, and calm.
The dark domain of pain and sin
Surrenders—Love doth enter in,
And peace is won, and lost is vice:
Right reigns, and blood was not its price."
