Developing Latent Abilities
That every earnest Christian Scientist desires to do his full part always, and especially now when the United Nations are called upon to put forth their greatest endeavors in the war effort, is true beyond cavil, but the way may not always be clear to him. He asks himself, "What special abilities do I possess, and how can I recognize them?" As in all things, the correct answers are found in the pages of the sacred Bible, and in the light which Christian Science throws upon them.
Christian Science emphasizes the fact that God, divine Mind, is the source of all intelligence, power, strength, and activity. Nothing exists except God and His reflection. Man is the idea of God and as such reflects and exercises this ever-present, always available intelligence and power. Man has no power, activity, or intelligence of his own, but by reason of his relationship to his Maker he enjoys all of God's qualities. Divine Mind possesses all the power, all the intelligence, and all the activity there is. There can be no limitation to God's power or activity. Man, acting under divine decree, must and does reflect ability, power, and intelligence in measureless degree.
Knowing these spiritual facts, we can prove that fear, timidity, or other forms of erroneous thinking cannot deprive us of the opportunity or willingness to obey God's direction. Obviously, all men do not have the same talents. One may be more expert in an art than his neighbor, but, in turn, the latter may possess a skill not enjoyed so completely by another. But whatever the ability may be, in its true essence it is evidence of the power and intelligence which come directly and only from divine Mind. Individual skill in science, industry, mechanics, law, music, and other arts with which men are endowed is not accidental; instead, it indicates in some degree that man is the reflection of Mind, God.
One may be so situated that he thinks his work is not important . or that he is deprived of the opportunity to display his greatest abilities. Again, he may be in a position of high authority and charged with great responsibility. To overcome discord resulting from such a situation, one needs to recognize his true status. No idea of God is unimportant or has responsibility which it cannot carry. If we accept the premise that the universe of Spirit is perfect and spiritual, then the only activity there is, is that which goes to make a perfect universe, in which each idea has its essential place and purpose. The student may thus see that there are no degrees of importance in divine Mind's activities, that no real spiritual activity is unessential or insignificant, and that each one possesses all the talent necessary to fulfill the demands upon him.
"God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis," writes Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 258 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In the light of the truth thus revealed, it is seen that man never lacks the ability, wisdom and intelligence which he needs to do God's work, and to do it according to divine direction.
In the universe of God a perfect place is provided for each of His ideas. In that perfect place, each has its harmonious and satisfying activity, since all true activity is an expression of divine Mind. Therefore, to enjoy the full measure of activity, we must prove that our activity is a reflection of Spirit, ever active and fruitful, and that intelligence, power, and understanding are wholly spiritual. Matter, the suppositional opposite of Spirit, has no presence, power, or reality, and does not exist in any form or human condition. There is no material situation which can interfere with or prevent our reflection of the divine qualities. Man is never without the divine qualities, because God is never without His reflection, and there is no stoppage or interference with divine activity.
If we understand these facts, we need not be anxious about our activities. We need only to listen for and obey the message which comes through spiritual inspiration, and follow the divine direction.
Mrs. Eddy has written (Science and Health, p. 128): "The human mind, imbued with this spiritual understanding, becomes more elastic, is capable of greater endurance, escapes somewhat from itself, and requires less repose. A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man. It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms. It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity."
The greatest teacher mankind has ever known admonished his followers to make the most of their talents. Jesus said: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
The light which Jesus urged us to let shine before men is the talent of spirituality which we use under divine direction, and in the using of which we are enabled to bless our fellow man.
By refusing to accept the limitations which human thinking or mortal mind would place upon us we can demonstrate in our daily activities more spiritual activity and recognize and develop the limitless abilities with which we are endowed.
