Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Wartime Activities
[From a Navy Flier]
In an advanced squadron there is time for little besides flying and studying. However, there have been no end of opportunities for right thinking in Christian Science—and so varied that they have ranged from seeing an impatient, intolerant instructor as a help, not a hindrance, to overcoming the dread of the instrument check.
The day before one particular check I had a hard time with my lesson. I couldn't tell on-course from off-course signals while flying the radio beam. The instructor said I'd have a tough time passing my check. The next day it so happened I drew him for my check. I had an hour first and went for a walk. In my pocket I found a little printed copy of the Daily Prayer (Church Manual, p. 41) and "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 14). The Christian Science Wartime Minister had given them to me the week before in chapel. I studied them carefully, and as I did so, the words "I will listen for Thy voice" seemed to be outstanding. I pondered it and suddenly realized it wasn't a radio sound that guided me at all, but that this was only an outward manifestation of what would come clear to me if I listened for God's voice. I stuck to this all through the check and flew a very good one. The instructor remarked that I'd made an "excellent comeback."
[From an American Soldier in India]
The Christian Science Camp Welfare Activities is doing a grand job. Everywhere, whether in the United States or in foreign places, their activities are felt and appreciated. Quote me, if you like, or any Christian Science student in the services, in saying that "Camp Activities" is "on the ball."
[From an Army Officer to a Christian
Science Wartime Minister]
Today I am thinking of those wonderful hours I spent with you, hours of progression. I have so very much to be thankful for. This greater realization of Truth that you helped to establish within me is at this very moment serving as certain protection for us in the present journey.
The work the Wartime Ministers are doing is of inestimable value to the Cause; this will be proved in a later tally. The Sunday services and the Wednesday evening meetings which I attended were always a blessing; they kept the pathway vividly lighted before me. They were always a calm—no matter what the storm. The daily problems are beautifully solved by simple realization and admission of the only Principle. Spiritualization of thought in the "war-torn" world terrorizes and dissolves the enemy in any form. True perception drives materiality into nothingness. The fear of danger and the danger of fear lose the ground on which they once seemed to hold their firm stance. The fear of death is eliminated through the understanding of Life.
The work has figured intimately in the construction of my fortress of truth. It will indeed withstand the gravest of mortal assaults. The outcome of the battle is certain. Nothing can stand against Truth.
[From a Soldier]
I should like to express my sincere gratitude for the constant help Christian Science has been to me since being overseas. I have my pocket Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I study regularly every day.
A few days ago I had a strenuous trip to make, and, when I started out, I did not feel quite equal to the journey. It seemed that an improper diet was the cause of my condition. I found the right solution to the problem when I came across what Mary Baker Eddy has to say about food—that food has no power to sustain or destroy life. With this thought in mind I was able to correct the erring mortal belief, and recuperated quickly from my ailments. I completed the journey, and the next day I was in the best of health.
[From a Navy Man]
I have just come from Christian Science services held in my area. May I express my gratitude for the Christian Science chaplain. He serves us so well and helps us keep our thinking above matter and fixed on God.
I've had several healings since I've been here. Sore feet, bunions, etc., were healed in one treatment. Christian Science has healed me of loneliness, belief of frustration of purpose, and has helped me to "keep on keeping on" in God's work. I have grown much closer to God since I've been here in boot training. God has led me here, and I'm not concerned about the next step. I am truly grateful.
Thanks for your faithfulness of service and vigilance in meeting the serviceman's need even before it arises. I'm grateful to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for her work in behalf of humanity.
