With sincere gratitude to God I...
With sincere gratitude to God I give my testimony of the healing power of Christian Science.
Over twelve years ago I was receiving medical treatment from a doctor, who told me that I should have an operation and that he could not give me any anesthetic. As my fear was great, I could not submit to his advice. He said that since that was all he could do for me, I had better try Christian Science. It was then I met a Christian Scientist, who helped me to secure all the authorized books and literature and showed me how to study the Lesson-Sermons each day. The operation was never necessary.
Several years ago, when I was suddenly taken ill with a nervous breakdown accompanied by hemorrhage, I was again healed through Christian Science treatments only. After I had been ill three days, during which my condition grew steadily worse, a practitioner was called. She began treating me at once. At the end of three weeks I was weak from loss of blood, and thought I was passing on. The practitioner was again called. When she came in she assured me that God was my Life, and told me to get out of bed. As I had been unable to sit up or eat all day and had not walked since I was first taken ill, I thought her request impossible. But much to my surprise, I found myself sitting on the edge of the bed with my feet on the floor. The practitioner, when she left, told me to sit on the porch, which I did that evening. I continued to do so each day and evening until I was strong enough to be around.
Later, when the hemorrhage seemed about to reverse the progress made, I held to Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 419), "Neither disease itself, sin, nor fear has the power to cause disease or a relapse." I was strengthened to do my own mental work by her instructions (ibid., p. 425): "If the case to be mentally treated is consumption, take up the leading points included (according to belief) in this disease. Show that it is not inherited; that inflammation, tubercles, hemorrhage, and decomposition are beliefs, images of mortal thought superimposed upon the body; that they are not the truth of man; that they should be treated as error and put out of thought. Then these ills will disappear," On the same page she adds, "Mortal man will be less mortal when he learns that matter never sustained existence and can never destroy God, who is man's Life."
I resumed my church attendance, and joined The Mother Church and a branch church, where I now enjoy serving on committees and teaching in the Sunday school. I have been able to help others and bring children into the Sunday school, who are happy to be there. I am grateful that my two sons have had the privilege of attending the Sunday school. I am grateful for all the Christian Science activities, also the literature, to which I subscribe. I would not want to be without them. I find reading the periodicals thoroughly brings wonderful spiritual enlightenment.—(Mrs.) Nellie Lilge, Los Angeles, California.
