When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was first introduced to me about thirty years ago, I was a trained nurse and therefore skeptical of its healing efficacy, since to my way of thinking healing of disease could come through no other means than surgery or medicine. Still I was filled with curiosity and began the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Little by little I began to prove the truth by putting it into practice as I understood it. Early in the study I memorized "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of the textbook. This has been a tremendous help and refuge in times of need.
At one time when I opened a window, the cord broke and my hands became wedged in between the sashes. During the imprisonment I quietly realized the truth of "the scientific statement of being." It was same time before I was released. I did not feel any pain; neither was there any mark on my hands.
On another occasion, when a pot full of boiling coffee was spilled on my foot, I immediately thought of this same scientific statement. I was none the worse for the incident, and later examination showed no mark on the foot. Some years afterward, with the help of a practitioner, I was healed instantaneously of hemorrhoids a few weeks before the birth of our youngest daughter. The confinement was harmonious.
When this daughter was a very small child, she was marvelously protected from scalding. A mass of boiling clothes was lifted out of the boiler and accidentally dropped on the child's head and shoulders. I cannot say what I thought of, but this I do know, that I was as undisturbed as if it had been cold water instead of boiling. The two persons who witnessed the incident were speechless.
The neighbor who tried to save the child got the boiling mass on her arm, too, but neither the neighbor nor the little one was any the worse for the experience. After a change of clothing the child went on with her play as if nothing had occurred.
Over two years ago I was healed of a long-standing bowel trouble. The consecrated work of a practitioner helped me in this dark hour. I was alone in the house, the pain was acute, and I was fast losing consciousness. I thought I was going to pass on, when suddenly the message that God fills all space, which I had received some days before from the practitioner, stood out clearly before my thought. The next moment I was free and feeling quite well. I have not been troubled in this way since. These are only a few of the many benefits and blessings brought into my experience through Christian Science.
My gratitude for the privilege of class instruction is deep. The teaching has helped me to probe and to understand the Scriptures. Science and Health is truly the key thereto. For all these blessings I give thanks to God, our Father-Mother; to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower; and to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.— (Mrs.) Elizabeth Jones, Oswestry, Shropshire, England.
