It is with a deep sense of gratitude...
It is with a deep sense of gratitude for Christian Science that this testimony is written. Christian Science was first mentioned to my family by an aunt, who told of some wonderful healings. After further inquiry, it was found that the nearest town where Science meetings were held was about ten miles away, but my father was impelled to make the trip, which resulted in many blessings. The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to us, and when we were reading it for the first time we found its message to be as oil poured on troubled waters.
Christian Science has truly been like a good Samaritan to me. Dissatisfied with my concept of life, but desiring something higher, I was receptive to this gentle ministration. It poured in the oil and wine of Truth and Love and healed the wounds of false notions, and sent me on my way rejoicing in spiritual regeneration.
Many times the way has been dark. Faults of character have been overcome through study of passages from the Bible and Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings. Some years ago I had difficulty in walking, because of pain at the end of the spine. The practitioner uncovered the error of thought as a false sense of responsibility. A passage from Scripture came to me as a deliverer: "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, ... casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." In a short time I was again normally active.
Another step of progress was made during the healing of erysipelas. Since the trouble was not overcome immediately, a doctor was called in and the required days of quarantine were adhered to, in obedience to the laws of the country. These days were employed in further study and prayer. Much gratitude is felt for the loving help of a practitioner and of my two sisters. Healing came as I realized the import of the passage on page 520 of Science and Health: "The depth, breadth, height, might, majesty, and glory of infinite Love fill all space. That is enough!"
Another great blessing is the privilege of having been a guest at a Christian Science House on two occasions. Each time its inspiration and comfort have elevated my thought to behold more clearly the great work of our Master, and to pray for more grace to do God's will. Many times the singing of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal has brought consolation, strength, and encouragement. I am increasingly grateful at this time for the Christian Science Quarterly with its Lesson-Sermons.
The spiritual growth afforded by membership in The Mother Church and in a Christian Science Society, class instruction and association meetings, work in the Sunday school and on a literature distribution committee are among the many blessings which I have experienced and for which gratitude to God is poured out.—(Miss) Jessie Lord, Waterfoot, Rossendale, Lancashire, England.
