The article published in your esteemed newspaper under the heading "With Pen in Hand," concerning Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, is evidently based on wrong sources of information.

Mrs. Eddy was by no means spared sickness and suffering, as the author of the article in question implies. On the contrary, ever since childhood she had been weak, and it was while suffering from an accident, the consequences of which threatened to prove fatal, that she began a more specific study of the Bible in order to try to ascertain the underlying divine Principle of the marvelous works performed by Jesus. This, in turn, led first to her own recovery and then to God's revelation to her of Christian Science; Most of the adherents of these teachings are people who, after being given up by the medical profession, have been healed.

Christian Science teaches that man is the perfect idea of the perfect God. It is to be noted, however, that this declaration does not refer to material man, but to man's real entity. In the proportion that human consciousness is spiritualized, and fear and sin are eliminated, improved health results.

Mrs. Eddy says on page 14 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love."
