At the early age of eight I was...
At the early age of eight I was dissatisfied with my orthodox Sunday school teacher's inability to answer my questions as to how Jesus healed and why we could not do it in the same way. I wanted to know what our source was, how we happened to be in this world, and what our purpose was. My teacher would say: "You are too young to ask such questions. I do not know the answer, but when you are old enough you will understand."
As the next four years passed by I became more dissatisfied with my family's religion. I could not see how a building that housed so much discord among its attendants could be a church of God. Finally I no longer attended the services and centered my attention on other things.
On the Christmas morning before Christian Science was presented to us my brother was healed of blindness, after many weeks of being unable to see, ashes having got into his eyes. This healing was the result of prayer by our entire family and mostly by our mother.
When Christian Science found us, we were in the depths of despair. We had almost no clothing to wear, and were sick and hungry for something better. I shall never forget the love expressed to us by members of the local Christian Science church. Every way we turned good and abundance poured forth. We have come slowly along the path of Truth, but the roots of spiritual understanding were planted deeply and firmly in our consciousness. We could not turn back.
We have had so many blessings in our home it would be impossible to count them all. Every one of us has been brought back from the doors of death at one time or another. Blood poisoning has been healed when there was much fear my sister's foot would have to be amputated, and large pieces of glass were removed from the same sister's leg with only Christian Science help. Harmonious action in childbirth was one of the first demonstrations made in our home. Many times when we were penniless our needs were met. Broken bones have been healed.
At the time my youngest brother was born he became ill with pneumonia, and the doctors held no hope for him. A Christian Science practitioner took up the work, and immediately after his release from the hospital he began to mend rapidly. I do not believe he has known a sick day in the six years since that time.
I could go on endlessly recounting the blessings that have come to us through our own study and through the help of practitioners. Every day brings us many small blessings. We do not even begin to realize the good that comes to us through knowing God better. We take so much for granted. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a local branch church. My earnest desire is daily to become more grateful for the everlasting protection of Him who knows all things.— (Mrs.) Elva A. Carlson, Murray, Utah.
