It is with great gratitude that I acknowledge the healing power of Christian Science.
From early childhood I had suffered from stomach trouble, pronounced by physicians as hereditary. After being under their care for many years, I was told that they had nothing further to offer than to suggest that I take morphine when the pain became very intense, and that I leave school and take a position that would permit me to do a great deal of walking out of doors. However, five years later, I became too weak to do much walking, and it was necessary to take a leave of absence from my work.
I went to visit an uncle, who had been healed in Christian Science of almost total blindness. When he saw my condition, he said, "God never made a sick man, and you can be healed through that knowledge." I did not want what I then thought Christian Science to be, but that evening, when I seemed to be passing on, I cried out for help. My uncle then told me about God and His idea, man, and about the truths taught in Christian Science. He gave me a silent treatment, and when I awoke the next morning I said that I was hungry— something that had not been the case for years. I was healed.
This was my introduction to the wonderful discovery made by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and opened the way for further demonstrations. Shortly thereafter I was healed of an unsightly growth on the end of my nose. Another healing was that of influenza, during an epidemic. This healing was accomplished with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, who reminded me that "underneath are the everlasting arms." An elbow, which was injured as the result of the overturning of my car, was healed through Christian Science. X rays, taken at the insistence of the insurance company, showed a badly injured elbow. The physician said that the injury would leave the arm partially stiff. However, in three days I drove a car, using my arm freely, and when subsequent X rays were taken no trace of the injury could be found.
Other members of my immediate family have been healed of bowed legs, pneumonia, hemorrhages, broken bones, and tonsillitis in a serious form; the need of an operation was avoided; great protection was experienced during a train wreck. Every healing has been permanent.
Words are inadequate to express my appreciation for all the blessings received and witnessed, and heartfelt gratitude goes out to God for our inspired Leader and to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower. I am also very grateful for class instruction, for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church for more than twenty-five years, and for the privilege of participating in many branch church activities.—Darwin H. Goldsmith, Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
