I feel that I have delayed too...
I feel that I have delayed too long in testifying to the many blessings which I have received since becoming a student of Christian Science, thirteen years ago. Prior to that time, I had enjoyed two healings in Christian Science. At that time I knew nothing about the operation of Christian Science, but was impressed by the loving nature of my sister's mother-inlaw, who was a consecrated student. She was visiting my sister, and I idly picked up her copy of the Sentinel, which was lying on the table, for the thought had come to me that there must be something in this religion, if its adherents were so outstanding.
After reading an article in the Sentinel entitled, "Healing of Resentment," I was healed of resentment myself, and immediately afterwards was afforded a proof of supply. This was indeed positive evidence of the efficacy of Christian Science, and I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Some time later, after the influenza epidemic of 1918, I was taken with a severe cold, which caused much anxiety in my family because two members had passed away during the epidemic. I refused to have a physician, and when alone read the chapter on Prayer in Science and Health. I read it two or three times, and the next day was up and about my duties, much to the surprise of my family.
It was not until ten years later, when I found myself ill with nervous exhaustion and without hope in the world, that I turned to Science and Health again and diligently studied it for many months. As a result I was healed of fatigue and constant headache, together with many other ills. There was still much fear to be overcome in my thought, so I visited a practitioner, and was lovingly shown how to study the weekly Lesson-Sermon, and given much encouragement. Through the loving work of this practitioner I was subsequently healed of hemorrhages and of the fear accompanying them.
I should like also to relate a more recent healing brought about through the study of the Lesson-Sermon. About a year ago I tripped over a water pipe in the basement, and fell, coming down on the concrete floor with great force, hitting the side of my head, as well as my shoulder and arm. My husband picked me up. Not being interested in Christian Science he wanted to send for the doctor, but I assured him that I was all right. He was reluctant to go to his business and leave me, but I convinced him that all would be well. After he left, I called a practitioner and asked her to work to allay fear. She lovingly reminded me that there were no accidents in God's kingdom and said she would work for me.
I took my books and started to read the Lesson for the week. There seemed to be much pain in my shoulder, and the thought came to me that perhaps it was broken, and I should be laid up for some time, just when I had many things to do in the settling of our home. How grateful I was on finding one of the citations in the Bible as follows: "Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee"! I saw very clearly that since God had laid up only goodness for man, I could not be laid up through an accident. I then realized that in Truth there were no accidents, and that I, being the image and likeness of God, could suffer no injury—because God would have to suffer it first, and I knew that since God is Spirit this was impossible.
For a few days I was unable to raise my arm without a great deal of pain, and my husband urged me to have the shoulder X-rayed. I agreed to do this. However, each time we were to go something intervened to prevent it, and at the end of the third day there was so much improvement that he apparently concluded Science was effective, for nothing more was said about an X ray. After a few days, when I was doing some ironing, error tried to convince me that I should not do this, for the bones in the shoulder seemed loose. I clung, however, to the thought that Mrs. Eddy gives us on page 385 of Science and Health, "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself," with the result that no bad effects were experienced, and in a very short time the healing was complete.
I am so grateful to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for this wonderful Science, and for all the activities of the Christian Science movement; for the privilege of being a member of a local branch church, as well as The Mother Church, and for the blessed privilege of class instruction. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to God for the many blessings received, and I daily rejoice in an ever-increasing understanding of His nearness, constant care, and protection, not only for myself, but for the whole world.
Through my study of Christian Science I have learned a way of life which enables me to say with the Psalmist, "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage."—(Mrs.) Rose L. Dick, La Grange, Illinois.
