I am profoundly grateful for the following healing in Christian Science. The muscles of my left leg caused me considerable trouble for a period of six months, and it was difficult to stand for any length of time, but I went about my daily work with occasional relief when the truth was applied.
My position on the ushering staff required standing during the entire church service. It was possible for me to do this only by constant metaphysical work.
Meanwhile, through present world conditions it became necessary for me to seek other employment than the business in which I was engaged. A fellow Christian Scientist lovingly assisted me in securing another position, and I was notified to report for work in two days.
At this point I became aware that in order to serve satisfactorily I must be free from the physical disturbance. I knew that every mortal theory or suggestion must be eliminated, such as a false sense of human relationship with its accompanying thoughts of ingratitude, injustice, and neglect. I replaced these erroneous beliefs with a truer sense of God as our Father-Mother. I turned to page 210 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" by Mrs. Eddy, to the article entitled, "What Our Leader Says," and I prayerfully pondered this admonition and counsel, which afforded me great peace as it flooded my consciousness with love. I saw the necessity of accepting the fact that material pleasure and pain are one and that real joy is spiritual. The evening was spent in work and study, and continued until early morning.
The more I studied, the clearer it became to me that this condition was not a part of the real man, and that therefore it could no longer be entertained in consciousness. Mrs. Eddy's explanation regarding nerves and muscles, as found on page 160 of Science and Health, revealed to me their powerlessness to act of themselves. I remembered Jacob's experience as recorded in the Bible (Genesis 32:24-30), and the spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy on page 308 of our textbook, "Jacob was alone, wrestling with error,—struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains,—when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science." Like Jacob, I wrestled and clung to Truth as it unfolded, until all opposing thoughts were eliminated. Then the healing was instantaneous and permanent. My new employment required a thorough physical examination, which I passed successfully.
I shall continue to be grateful for this added proof of the instantaneous healing power of Christian Science, and for every source of inspiration so generously supplied through the various activities of The Mother Church. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of class instruction. This experience has given me encouragement and spiritual strength and a better understanding wherewith to practice the healing power of Christian Science. I am increasingly grateful for "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and all the other writings by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.— Mark Van Nink, Chicago, Illinois.
