The attendance at a Christian Science...
The attendance at a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting changed the entire course of my life.
I was unemployed and in poor health when I took this step at my sister's recommendation. Knowing nothing of Christian Science, I was not hopeful, but I decided that at least it could not harm me to investigate. My main impression was of the peace and harmony reflected by the congregation at a time of great economic disturbance.
I was not willing to have treatment from a practitioner, for I had been in the hands of doctors, chiropractors, and faith-healers for many years without experiencing any permanent benefits, and was only prepared to investigate Christian Science provided I could achieve results through my own study of the Bible, the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and other Christian Science literature.
Since I was out of work. I was able to spend several hours daily in the local Christian Science Reading Room, and soon experienced an instantaneous healing of the results of an accident to my hand. The healing came while I was pondering "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health (p. 468), and was trying to overcome anger against the one who had unknowingly caused the trouble.
This proof of the result of constructive thinking, as taught in Christian Science, gave me faith and confidence to continue with the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, and to attend the church services regularly.
A few weeks later I was instantaneously healed of the need for glasses, which I had worn for many years to correct the so-called incurable defect of astigmatism and shortsightedness. This healing took place during a Wednesday testimony meeting, after I had endeavored for three days to see the good in my fellow men, instead of habitually criticizing them.
A further period of study brought about the healing of a spinal complaint, which had also been pronounced incurable, and for which a surgical belt had been worn for five years.
By this time I began to see that at last I had found a satisfactory basis on which to order my life, a basis founded on Principle, and one that removed the feeling of being at the mercy of economic disturbances, illnesses, and false appetites.
After five months I asked for treatment from a practitioner, and through her loving work secured a satisfactory position which enabled me to take my family back to our native country.
I am grateful for the opportunity and privilege of having class instruction, and for the good that Christian Science is doing for mankind today.—Trevor C. Rayner, Wellington, New Zealand.
