True Giving

Never in the history of the world has the need for love and unselfishness been greater than it is today. Thousands of human beings seem, for the present, to be bereft of homes and the simplest necessities of human life. To them their plight may seem desperate indeed. Those who know nothing of God as everpresent Principle, the substance which will meet their every human need, may seem for a time to be separated, by their own acceptance of false belief, from the very benefits which are at hand. Where, then, may these weary ones turn except to God the source of true wealth, the wealth of spiritual understanding?

Christian Science is teaching us to look away from the material world to the perfect creation of God, Spirit, Mind, Life, Truth, Love, which is ever at peace, existing in perfect harmony. However transcendental this fact may seem to the unenlightened human thought. Christian Science shows it to be the invincible, practical truth; and it is the sacred obligation of every Christian Scientist to hold to this fact, not only claiming it in his own experience, but knowing that it is true for all mankind. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 518), "The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it seeking his own in another's good."

While we, as Christian Scientists may see that the world's great need is for spiritual understanding, nevertheless we must not forget the necessity of meeting the human need as well. Jesus left us his wise example in feeding the hungry multitude. He not only fed them spiritually by his teaching; he also saw their human need and supplied it, leaving the invincible proof of Principle's ever-presence and practical ability to meet every human requirement. In feeding the multitude Jesus took advantage of a great opportunity to glorify God through proving His abundance in practical application.

That same unfailing supply is at hand today, and those who understand and realize its presence through Christian Science have the same opportunity Jesus had to comfort a hungry world. We share what we have already demonstrated of substance without impoverishing ourselves as we see our supply to be a constantly flowing stream of good from Principle to receptive hearts. Whenever the material, outlined sense of anything enters our consciousness, limitation and obstruction follow. Let us beware, then, of accepting anything apart from infinite Principle as our source of supply, that we may share fearlessly, joyously, because we know that we can never exhaust Principle.

Our opportunities for giving are continuous; and by the very nature of His all-harmonious being, God gives abundant means of fulfillment. We need only to remember that man is the reflection of God. Reflection is spiritual activity and since God is the only Mind, man must be the expression of God's perfection. Man, therefore exists to show forth God's ever-present activity. Maintaining individual right thinking is the one way of true giving to a world in need.

We must learn to hold to Truth, and of each thought which comes to us ask the simple question, "Is it a thought that is expressive of God?" If so, then it comes from God and is sure to bless and heal, and is, therefore, part of our real being, or substance. If a thought comes to us that is less than good, that suggests less than perfection, let us drop it quickly as a robber thought, coming from mortal mind, seeking to confuse and limit. This constant outpouring of Truth is the highest, purest type there is of giving.

At this dark moment in the world's history, let us ask ourselves, as Christian Scientists, "What are we giving to the world?" Are we personalizing evil, seeing as real the evil suggestions of mortal mind, when our right thinking could effectively aid in destroying evil beliefs? If we believe that "the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace"—and we must believe this if we are to experience healing and protection in Christian Science—then we shall be honest enough to practice what we preach in our thinking, our acting, and our speaking. Let us not limit one another through criticism and faultfinding: let us use our God-given capacities to see all as the sons of God, beloved and perfect.

Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 154,155): "Pray without ceasing. Watch diligently; never desert the post of spiritual observation and self-examination. Strive for self-abnegation, justice, meekness, mercy, purity, love. Let your light reflect Light. Have no ambition, affection, nor aim apart from holiness. Forget not for a moment, that God is All-in-all—therefore, that in reality there is but one cause and effect." If all Christian Scientists everywhere would strive to be obedient to this admonition of our Leader, what freedom, what peace, what progress we could give to this troubled world! Let us arouse ourselves and work toward this goal. Let us be worthy of our calling as Christian Scientists.
