As soon as I was introduced to...
As soon as I was introduced to Christian Science I recognized its value and respected its teachings and author.
Some time later, feeling the need of counsel, I called on an experienced Christian Science practitioner. During one of my earlier visits to her office I had been instantaneously healed of the use of tobacco, a habit which I had had from early youth. This healing has been of great help to me when I have had a difficult situation to meet.
I had been studying the Lesson–Sermons for a very short time and knew very little about the subject. I did, however, desire to show in some way my appreciation of the good I had already experienced. I felt that giving up tobacco would in a measure be tangible evidence. In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Right desire or prayer on my part, together with the practitioner's clear understanding of God's allness, oneness, presence, and power, brought about the healing.
All that is unlike good must be a false sense of good, in this case a false sense of pleasure in and of matter. It was not until several days later that I fully realized what had taken place. Not only had I ceased to use tobacco but I had no craving for it. This healing occurred some fourteen years ago, and I can gratefully say it has been permanent. Chronic bronchial trouble gradually disappeared, and I have since been entirely free from colds.
The authorized literature has been very helpful. Our lectures, coming to us with their timely presentations of the power of God as taught in Christian Science, are a never–ending source of inspiration and encouragement. For the expanding sense of freedom which I am gaining from allowing God, good, to inspire, direct, and reward my every experience, I am sincerely grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who so unselfishly worked to discover and share Christian Science with all mankind.—Cecil Palmer Troeger, Chicago, Illinois.
