When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was first brought to my notice, a good many years ago, I was seeking something I could not define. It was only when a friend lent me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I discovered that there was an actual Science by which one's life could be governed, that I was perfectly satisfied that the way was before me.
It seemed difficult to comprehend the fact that matter is not substance. One of the first demonstrations of healing I made came about when I caught a glimpse of this truth. I had been reading "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health (p. 468), in which Mrs. Eddy says, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter." As I pondered this I held up my hand and looked at it, asking myself how I could believe it was not substance, when I could see it and feel it. Then something of the spiritual nature of substance dawned upon me, and for the first time I was able to grasp in a degree the meaning of that scientific statement.
In the afternoon, when I was helping to fold up a camp bed which had stuck fast with rust, it suddenly collapsed and my finger was trapped by a rusty clamp and cut open to the bone. Quickly remembering that it was the same hand I had held up earlier, I was able to know that substance had not been damaged. After the first acute pain, which soon subsided, I did not look at the finger, and held steadfastly to the glimpse of spiritual light that I had seen in the morning.
This occurred in the early afternoon, and in the evening, on examining the finger, I discovered that the healing had already taken place. Where a few hours before had been a gaping wound was now merely a thin, red seam, and in a day or two even that slight evidence had gone.
Since then I have witnessed many and varied healings which have been brought about by the understanding of the truth revealed in Christian Science.
I am truly grateful to Christ Jesus, who first brought the light to dispel the darkness of the ages; and to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who by her unselfed love for humanity revealed again the one sure healing truth and let her light shine so brightly that it completely pierced the dense mist of material existence. I am grateful for years of comfort and of guidance by that light; for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, for class instruction, and for the Christian Science literature. Many times when my path has appeared dark and difficult, an article or a testimony has restored my joy.—(Miss) Grace Hope, Richmond, Natal, South Africa.
