"Rouse ye"
These are days that arouse one to do the best thinking of which he is capable. It is not sufficient to believe that all will work out harmoniously, for conditions are fraught with possibilities too grave to base our hopes for improvement on mere beliefs. It is essential that we understand and know that God's law governs the universe, and that man is and will continue to be obedient to this law.
What is this divine law which governs all? In "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) Mary Baker Eddy defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."
Since Christian Science is "the law of God," it is the law of Mind, of Principle. Since it interprets and demonstrates good, it must be active; it must be the manifestation of Soul, establishing harmony in all right activity. Therefore, there is no room for lack—lack of opportunity, of happiness, of health, of peace. There is no room for fear, discouragement, apathy, or any other form of inertia where God's law is ever active.
In the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 283), "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action." Therefore, in all our affairs we have authority for knowing that action is harmonious, normal, ever present, and uninterrupted. The belief of individual, national, or international depression or turmoil is but the illusory opposite of an individual, national, or international expression of God's munificence and harmony. We must know that Principle governs, and that all is as perfect, as undeviating, as Principle, which is absolute, eternal, imperative, infinite. Since man is the expression of omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent Mind, he must be governed by this one Mind. As we understand and apply this spiritual fact, we can prove that our business is orderly, harmonious, and productive.
A nation is no stronger than the thinking of the citizens of which it is composed. The more individuals learn that God governs, that their allegiance is to God, divine Principle, not primarily to a human being, that He is omnipotent and the forces of evil impotent, will nations be strengthened. The day will come, the Scriptures tell us, when all men, from the least to the greatest, will acknowledge God as the only governing power of the universe, including man.
Let us think for a moment of a spiritual kingdom in which God's law is the only law recognized. It would be a kingdom overflowing with abundance, with divine ideas animated by the activity of Soul. These ideas of assurance, confidence, purity, good cheer are spiritual, practical, and available. And where is there one who does not desire more of confidence, assurance, purity, good cheer?
Such a kingdom is being established today in the consciousness of each individual who accepts and utilizes the teaching of Christian Science, as he routs fear, apathy, and discouragement, and maintains a sense of security, joyous activity, and an assurance of Love's ever-presence, not only for himself but for all mankind. Dynamic spiritual thinking is a force for aiding in establishing peace among all nations. The power of such thinking cannot be overestimated; and never in the history of the world has it been more needed.
Today, each Christian Scientist should be earnestly at work supporting the men and women in charge of executive trusts. Theirs is a grave responsibility, and they need all the aid we can give them through our consecrated prayers for the establishing of God's government on earth. Let us remember the Scriptural promise, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." Let us affirm that divine Mind is the only intelligence, imparting the perspicacity to make wise decisions quickly and to execute them expeditiously.
Also, let us be alert in knowing the ever-present protection of divine Love. Then those who are in combat, or who are crossing seas, swamps, or barriers infested with seeming danger, will be benefited by our true thinking. By constantly knowing that God's children are in the presence of the Most High, under the guidance of the Lord of hosts, we can help to bring to all the true sense of divine protection.
We must be alert. This is no time for captious criticism or apathetic indifference. Neither is it a time to let inertia thwart our efforts in building up our spiritually mental defense. We must valiantly challenge the mesmerism and aggressive suggestions of the one enemy—mortal mind. We must be actively, earnestly, about our Father's business, the business of overcoming hate and malice, greed and intrigue, and of establishing the reign of peace here and now.
Jeremiah voices the divine assurance, "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." This "expected end" is a perpetual unfoldment of good which is constantly appearing as one realizes the inseparability of Principle and its idea. It is the operation of God's law. Harmony will be made manifest in the world as we respond to the challenge:
"Rouse ye, soldiers of the cross,
And lift your banner high;
Servants of a mighty cause,
Put sloth and slumber by.
"Rouse ye, rouse ye, face the foe,
Rise to conquer death and sin;
On with Christ to victory go,
O side with God, and win!"
