It is with an ever-recurring...
It is with an ever-recurring sense of deep gratitude that I recall several definite instances of protection afforded me through my study of Christian Science in the early months of the first World War. I had known of this wonderful revelation of Truth only a short time, and it is with the hope that these experiences may help others in the present conflict of mortal mind that I relate them.
In February of 1918, while I was serving with the Rainbow Division in France, the company in which I was a first lieutenant received orders to occupy a certain sector in the front line. While proceeding across an open field on a reconnaisance mission to reach our position, through an intermittent artillery fire from the enemy which covered our approach, each officer was forced to cross singly as best he could between shell bursts. The first officer to go was struck, and had to be hospitalized at once, and being the next in line to go I proceeded prayerfully, trusting to divine protection, and reached the trenches unharmed.
After being in the front line for only a few days, we received a communication to prepare for a severe gas attack, which was expected shortly. While awaiting the attack, I read and studied a wonderful article in a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel, which I had just received from my wife. I was so helped by this article, and my thoughts were so uplifted, that I was not at all surprised the attack never came.
At a later date, while we were withdrawing to the support line, the enemy sought to intercept our withdrawal by putting down an intense artillery barrage across our route, but through a miscalculation on their part as to our position at that time, the barrage fell harmlessly behind us, and every man was protected.
Some years later, while I was stationed in the Philippines, a strange disease appeared upon my hands, which caused great irritation and itching. Every finger had to be bandaged daily, and at times the condition seemed unbearable. As required by the army regulations I reported to the medical officer, who said it was a very rare tropical disease for which medical science had as yet found cure. I was due to return to the States about this time, and upon my arrival help was given by a Christian Science practitioner. In less than two weeks my hands were normal again, and free from all blemishes and irritation.
Through gratitude and consecration to this wonderful truth and by taking all the orderly steps provided for us to acquire a deeper understanding of it, I have been able to help my fellow men. By being active in church work and thus serving the Cause wherever I have found myself, I have tried to express my appreciation for the protection afforded me and all who put their trust in Truth.
By understanding that God is the only real power, we experience protection and divine guidance in all our daily activity. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, so clearly sets forth this fact in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 149, 150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance."—(Colonel) George Bagby Campbell, Providence, Rhode Island.
