Christian Science was brought to my attention in 1908...
Christian Science was brought to my attention in 1908, after I had experienced years of suffering, during which time practically every material means of relief had been tried and had failed, and eminent physicians and surgeons had pronounced my case hopeless, giving me but a few months to live and saying that nearly every organ in my body was diseased as a result of typhoid fever and complications, which I had had several years before. In desperation I turned to Christian Science with my whole heart, and through the loving help of practitioners, and the daily prayerful and faithful study of Mrs. Eddy's works, especially of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," together with the Bible, I improved perceptibly from week to week, until the healing finally came.
On page 486 of our textbook Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence." Several years ago, through the realization of the truth of this statement, I was healed of deafness in one of my ears, and also was able to lay off glasses, which I had worn for twenty-two years, having been unable to read without them. I had been working in Christian Science to overcome failing vision, but only spasmodically, and the trouble was not overcome. Then, when it seemed my sight was going fast, I made up my mind to work more earnestly over the condition than I had ever worked before. That evening I picked up Science and Health and tried to read it without my glasses, but I could not outline the letters; all was a blur. The thought came to me, You cannot see to read, but you can pray. I continued to know the truth for eight days, and on the evening of the eighth day my normal vision came, although it lasted only about one minute, when a mist seemed to come over my eyes. The next day it came to me clearer than ever that sight is an idea in Mind, perfect and eternal, and is focused in the infinite and not dependent on matter; that evening my healing came, and I have never worn glasses since and can read very fine print.
From early childhood if I ate anything containing acid my teeth would be put on edge to such a degree that I could hardly eat. This trouble has been overcome through the application of Christian Science, and now I can eat the sourest fruit or food without any ill effects. Many times I have had decayed cavities in my teeth, but each time these teeth have been beautifully healed and filled by a method of surgery far superior to material science: by knowing that there is no decay in God's spiritual, perfect, eternal creation. Several years ago three of my teeth became very loose. Again I steadfastly applied the truth, and in about a month the gums and teeth became normal; and today, though I am well past the threescore-and-ten mark, I still retain all of my teeth in perfect condition, with the exception of one wisdom tooth broken off in an accident.
Christian Science has healed me of stomach trouble, rheumatism, insomnia, neuritis, dislocated wrist, corns, warts, and colds.
Recently I had a most wonderful healing. The illness, to material sense, was brought on through a belief of exhaustion and being overheated, because all day I had helped to fight a very dangerous fire, which had threatened to enter my grove. A few days later I was confined to my bed, and for six weeks, though under the care of practitioners, I gradually grew worse, and paralysis developed. There was no action, and certain other functions of the body were impaired. Finally, however, I was able to get around on crutches, and in about a month I was restored to normal activity and health, and was able to discard the crutches and to be about my work as usual. This was another proof that the law of God, when persistently, prayerfully, and understandingly applied, destroys the seeming reality and power of error in all its forms, no matter how tenacious, real, and powerful the error may seem to the mortal senses.
I shall never cease to be grateful for the faithful work done on this case by loving practitioners, and for my dear wife and kind friends who stood so close during the whole experience.
Words cannot possibly express my gratitude to God for Christian Science, for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and for Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, whose courage, purity, unselfishness, and deep love for God and man enabled her to become the revelator to this age of the healing truth taught and practiced by Jesus. I am grateful for all the activities of the Christian Science movement and for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church.

I have witnessed all these healings of my husband and am happy to verify his statements in regard to them. I should like to express my deepest gratitude to God for these healings and for the manifold blessings and wonderful physical healings that have come to me through the ministrations of Christian Science. I have been healed of pneumonia in its severest form when I seemed to be passing on; also of ptomaine poisoning, abscess, warts, infection in the eyes and throat, colds and influenza, and about two years ago I was very quickly healed of an alarming case of blood poisoning in the hand.
Though I am profoundly grateful for the physical healings, I am vastly more grateful for the spiritual unfoldment of the Scriptures that is coming to me daily through the prayerful and systematic study of our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and our Leader's writings. Words can never express my gratitude to our revered Leader for making it possible, through her inspired writings and all the activities she has established in The Mother Church, for mankind to gain a demonstrable understanding of the Bible. The Christian Science textbook is indeed a "key" to the Scriptures.
I am grateful for the blessed privilege I have had for many years of teaching in the Sunday school, and I pray daily to express the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," so that I may be a help to others in their journey Spiritward and be worthy of the name Christian Scientist.
