With a heart full of gratitude for the blessings which have...
With a heart full of gratitude for the blessings which have come to me through christian Science, I give this testimony.
After studying Christian Science for about two months, I was compelled to prove the understanding of Truth which I had gained. My baby, less than two years old, was taken seriously ill with croup. He had just been healed of pneumonia and inflammation of the bowels a short while before. I was filled with fear. I was at a hotel in a small town where there were no other Scientists, and I feared that others might hear the severe cough. I worked sincerely for the baby the best I knew how, and about midnight the condtion changed; the fever left and the breathing became normal, and in the morning the healing was complete, for which I was deeply grateful.
The same evening, when my husband came in from work, his foot was swollen and inflamed; he had stepped on a rusty nail, which went deep into the foot. He was hardly able to walk. he expressed the thought that blood poisoning had set in, and the foot was very painful. I asked if I might work for him in Christian Science. At first he refused, but a short while later he consented to my treating him. In the morning the swelling was down and the inflammation was gone, so that he was able to put on his shoe and go to work. In the evening I asked, "How is the foot?" He looked and could barely distinguish which foot had been injured.
On a Saturday night, about a month later, when I had been planning on going to church on Sunday morning and to a lecture which was to be held about twenty-seven miles away in the afternoon, error again presented itself. I worked to know that error could not keep me from going. On Sunday morning the fever was gone, and I took the baby to church and to the lecture, where he was quiet and good.
In the fall of 1924, my son, aged fifteen, went downtown on his brother's bicycle on an errand, and while en route was run over by an automobile. The bicycle was smashed, and he was pulled unconscious from under the front axle of the car. Someone standing ner, who knew we were Christian Scientists, asked the physician who was going to take him to the hospital to take him home to his mother. So the doctor and another young man brought my son home. The physician said that he must be taken to the hosptial for medical care. Immediately I realized that there are no accidents in divine Mind. Then I said, "I will give the lad the very best attention available." Then the doctor said, "You should at once call your family physician for an X-ray picture, because I saw the automobile go over the lad." Again I knew that there could not be a breakage or dislocation in God's kingdom or in God's child. No physical examination was given.
When I was alone with my son I told him that if he wanted a doctor he might have whomever he wanted, but that he must say what he wanted. He said, "Mother, won't you work for me?" "Yes," I replied, "if you really want Christian Science treatment, I'll be glad to work for you, providing you do your part." I handed him Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and sat right down and worked for him. After the first treatment he was able to walk slowly upstairs to bed. All night the truth was applied, and in the morning he asked if he might go to school. He did so, and the treatments were continued, which resulted in a complete healing.
Such an experience proves that, as the Bible says, "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." In Science and (p. 1) Mrs. Eddy says, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love;" and the statements from the textbook along with the Bible can be proved when applied sincerely and firmly. On page 261 we find the command, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."
For these proofs of the healing efficacay of Christian Science I am truly grateful. I am grateful for class instruction and for many other opportunities for growth that come through the Christian Science movement.
