For more than twenty—three years Christian Science has...
For more than twenty—three years Christian Science has helped me, and healed me when I have needed healing. I rejoice in an ever—growing understanding of God's allness.
A predisposition to anemia, for which I had taken preventive medicine since girlhood, disappeared soon after I began to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as did periodically recurring attacks of facial neuralgia, and spells of severe influenza, which appeared every winter. I had become so used to suffering from these ills that I did not even think of them as curable until they failed to return. Then I realized that I had been healed by reading the textbook with a keen desire to understand and to conform to the truth set forth therein.
Our four daughters, now young women, were placed in a Christian Science Sunday School, which each of them atended regularly from the age of four years. They have been beautifully protected, contracting very few of the so—called called children's diseases.
One healing took place about sixteen years ago, when our eldest daughter was six years old. The child became ill one afternoon, and a practitioner was called to work for her. The next morning, when I told the practitioner of the appearance of a rash, she advised calling a physician, that the case might be reported to the Board of Health, as the law required. The doctor came, pronounced it a case of scarlet fever, and put us under quarantine. The following morning, less than forty—eight hours after being taken ill, the child was entirely well, with no sign of the disease remaining. The doctor was again called and found the patient recovered. He remarked that he had seen healings occur that way several times under Christian Science treatment.
I mention this particular healing hoping to encourage parents of young children to persevere in their efforts to overcome fear of contagious disease. Little children are not susceptible to these diseases when the parents' thoughts are free from the fear of contagion, and lifted to trust in God. This I have proved. The great comfort of freedom from fear of contagion has been mine for many years, and I am gratefully pressing on to a higher understanding of freedom.
Thankful as I truly am for the abundant health of my family and myself, mindful as I am of the importance of physical healing in Christian Science, I am most grateful for the constantly unfolding sense of God's ever—presence and loving care, which I am gaining day by day through the continued study of Christian Science.
Sorrow that would have been unbearable without the teachings of Christian Science has come to me in these years. At such times, turning to God, as our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, admonishes us to do throughout her writings, I have been able to discern the needed lesson and to profit by it.
I am happy to be a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, and appreciate the privilege of serving in the latter. Class instruction is a priceless jewel, marking my twentieth year as a student of Christian Science.
Sincere gratitude for what Christian Science is and for what even the smallest understanding of it does, impels me to give this testimony.—(Mrs.) Elizabeth Christan Cheetham, Toledo, Ohio.
