In giving thanks for many blessings received since beginning...
In giving thanks for many blessings received since beginning the study of Christian Science, I should like to offer an account of some valuable lessons learned through being enabled to realize that we need never accept as a reality any inharmonious circumstance that may seem to be beyond our control.
At the age of ten months, with the loving help of a practitioner, a son was healed of rickets. The healing was rapid. At one period the baby seemed to be in great pain, and cried whenever he was touched; then, within a very short time, it was seen that there was no longer any pain or discomfort. All the medical prophecies of delayed walking powers in such cases were discounted, and the progress of the child was entirely normal from that time on.
When the boy was old enough to attend school, there was considerable disappointment because, through a residential disqualification, he was unable to attend the school which was thought most suitable. He was sent to another school, but there he seemed to be backward and inattentive. An attempt to settle the problem by criticizing the child for disobedience in not applying himself more diligently to his schoolwork, met with no success; for the uncorrected thought of the parents, that he would progress normally if he attended another school, was still being allowed to hold him in bondage.
I now began to realize that I was accepting a condition which I could prevent by applying the teachings of Christian Science. A short conversation with a more experienced student of Christian Science enabled me to perceive how the correct mental work could be done. The truth about the condition seemed to pour into my consciousness, and it was joyfully seen that the boy was not, in reality, an immature child, difficult to educate, but a full and complete manifestation of divine intelligence; also, that as an idea of God, Truth, Love, the teacher could impart only that which is good, true, and loving; and, finally, that no mortal belief of lack of intelligence could be held by anyone to retard the child's progress, since each one could bear witness only to Truth. So much happiness and gratitude were felt during this revelation that the healing was instantaneous and complete. All the anxiety was removed, and within a day or two the boy was telling of being complimented for progress at school, and he then began to write and read at home for pleasure, an occupation for which he had never previously shown any enthusiasm. The boy has been a regular attendant at a Christian Science Sunday School from the age of three years. He has a sufficient grasp of the truths taught in Christian Science to enable him to realize that he can reflect Love wherever he may be.
For every activity of The Mother Church and branch churches, for the loving help and encouragement of a practitioner and many friends, for the example of real humility observed in many who have progressed farther than myself, and for all the lessons learned in Christian Science, I am most grateful.—Wilfrid James Absalom, Beddington, Surrey, England.
