The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Bridgeport, Connecticut (First Church).

Lecturer: George Channing; introduced by Mrs. Marjorie Jones, who said:—

Perhaps never before in the history of mankind has there been a greater demand for a dependable, saving influence to guide individuals and nations out of chaos and darkness into harmony and peace. Centuries ago our Master rebuked the Pharisees for seeking a material form of salvation, when he said, "O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" It is imperative that we lift our gaze to something higher than material ways and means, and thus be able to meet the need of our times.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 264): "Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things. Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind?" Through the revelation of Christian Science, all who will are privileged to do this and to feel the unspeakable peace and security which follow.

Macon, Georgia (First Church).

Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Truman Willis Clifton, who said:—

The Bible, when studied in conjunction with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, ceases to be a book of mystery, and the beautiful truths contained therein are unfolded. The promise of Christ, Jesus, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," is today being fulfilled in some measure by thousands of consecrated workers in the Christian Science movement throughout the world: the sick are healed, sinners reformed, and to the poor the gospel is preached.

The chapter entitled "Fruitage" in the textbook contains one hundred pages of authentic testimoines of the healing efficacy of God's ever-operative law, which is just as effective today as it was nineteen centuries ago.

In our family I have witnessed the healing of a severe case of inflammatory rheumatism, heart disease, appendicitis, and many minor ailments too numerous to mention here. These healings were brought about, not by the exercise of so-called human will-power, nor by drugs, but through absolute reliance on God, through knowing that with Him all things are possible.

Whatever your problem may seem to be, whether physical, mental, or otherwise, Christian Science offers you the correct solution.

In relating her discovery of this system of Mind-healing, Mrs. Eddy writes on page 126 of the textbook: "The Bible has been my only authority. I have had no other guide in 'the straight and narrow way' of Truth."

Springville, New York (Society).

Lecturer: Dr. John R. Carr; introduced by Mrs. Ruth C. Hall True, who said:—

The material progress of the civilized world during the last seventy-five years is a well-known fact. It is not true, however, that this progress has brought to mankind security, happiness, or an assurance of the pressence and power of God. To the people of this modern world comes the loving Scriptural admonition, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee." The way to this true acquaintance with God is today revealed to us through Christian Science, a demonstrable religion, which all may understand and practice.

Christian Science answered my questions concerning the Bible, revealed the meaning of life to me, and for nearly twenty-five years has been my only physician, my comfort in sorrow, my guide in perplexity. What it has done for me and for countless others, it will do for you, if you will but open your mental doors humbly to receive it.

Leesburg, Florida (Society).

Lecturer: Adair Hickman; introduced by Mrs. Exelle Youmans, who said:—

Christian Science brings to the world a message of hope and cheer. It brings us a larger understanding of God, who is universal, infinite, ever-present Love. We learn that there is nothing too good to be true, that eternal Truth is infinite good. Christian Science is not merely a beautiful theory which can never become practical; it is a demonstrable religion.

Jesus' commands to his followers, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise th dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give," are commands to us also today. Through the study, application, and demonstration of Science, we bring into our experience love, joy, and health. These Godlike qualities are our divine heritage, the gift of the Father to all His children. I testify very gratefully that the understanding of the kingdom of God which Christian Science has given to me has been powerful enough to give me a wealth of spiritual harmony.

Baraboo, Wisconsin (First Church).

Lecturer: Thomas E. Hurley; introduced by Mrs. Elizabeth Harwood Thuerer, who said:—

Christian Scientists are beginning to understand Job's words, "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee." Before becoming interested in Christian Science, they had heard of God, and probably held a more or less theoretical concept of Him; but after gaining some understanding of God as Spirit and man as spiritual, through Mary Baker Eddy's clear interpretation of the Bible. which she has given us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," students of Christian Science learn to become conscious of God's love, power, and presence.

The understanding of Christ, Truth, brings freedom from all that is unlike God, good, and this understanding becomes immediately available in the life of every Christian Scientist.

I have experienced this healing power many times in the almost forty years of my dependence upon it. I was healed of blood poisoning through Christian Science treatment, many years ago. As I pondered the father's loving words to the elder son, in the parable of the prodigal, "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine," I realized that as a child of God I had the right to claim my oneness with Him. The consciousness of my unity with God met my need, and I was healed.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts (Society).

Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Miss Effie V. Young, who said:—

In the Bible there are many commands and many promises. Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." He also said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Over twenty years ago I was suffering from severe stomach trouble, and I turned to Christian Science for help. I was told to watch my thinking. At that time I could not see what connection my thinking had with stomach trouble. I began to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in connection with the Bible, and the truth healed me. Since that time I have relied entirely on Christian Science.
