Out of deep gratitude and love for Christian Science,...
Out of deep gratitude and love for Christian Science, which has been my only help and Comforter for over twenty-nine years, I write this testimony.
When I first heard of Christian Science, I did not take it up for physical healing for myself, although I was greatly in need of it at that time. When a child, I had often asked my grandmother and others why Jesus was not here to heal us, and why we took medicine instead of praying to God to heal us. The answers were always that healing as Jesus did it was only for his time and not for us. To my child thought this seemed very unfair, and after a time I closed my Bible and refused to attend church.
In 1910, a friend told me of her wonderful healing by Christian Science of appendicitis, after the doctor had said there was absolutely no hope for her recovery. This was the first time I had ever heard of this religion. I said, "Why, that is the way Christ Jesus healed, and Christian Science must be the Comforter promised us in the Bible."
My first healings and many that followed were instantaneous. The night I began to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I telephoned to a practitioner and told her of the fear and bondage I had been experiencing; that for months I had been taking a drug in order to sleep. She lovingly assured me that God was caring for me and in Him I would find peace and rest. After reading a little of the chapter called "Prayer," I turned out the light, and the next thing I knew it was morning, and my mother was calling me. I had gone to sleep without the drug and had awakened healed.
During the years which have followed I have experienced many healings, some with the help of practitioners, and others through my own prayer and study. Some of the healings were of neuritis, ptomaine poisoning, pneumonia, liver trouble, periodic bilious attacks, dizziness, fainting spells, and trouble with legs and feet. A badly scalded hand was healed in a few minutes. A sprained ankle and dislocated knee were healed in less than two days. I walked in less than a week on a foot that had been badly crushed in an automobile accident.
The births of my two boys, born eighteen years apart, were both very quick and harmonious. At the birth of the younger boy the doctor suggested that I should go to a hospital, but I insisted on remaining at home. When the doctor arrived, he went into the living room and prepared to rest, saying that it would be some time before he was needed. But due to the good work of the practitioner, every material law was broken, and the child was born very quickly and harmoniously.
I am deeply grateful for class instruction by a consecrated teacher of Christian Science. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the opportunity of serving in many of the activities of the movement; and I daily thank God for Science, which has proved to me that health, happiness, and peace can be found only in that consciousness which acknowledges and demonstrates the supremacy of Love. And for all of these great blessings I am deeply grateful to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
