"Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing...
"Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them." Four years ago, while on vacation, I attended a Christian Science service where these words were part of the solo. I was in great need of peace, and pondering them I realized that our Leader explains this law in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1), where she defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." I resolved to have more love for this law.
At the end of my vacation I started my drive home, holding to these words from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 454): "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way." That afternoon my light coupe was struck by a heavy sedan, driven at high speed, and I was thrown onto the pavement. I had no sense of the impact. Many months before, at a Wednesday evening meeting, I had been impressed with a certain statement in the testimony of a healing of one who had been unconscious, and now I came to consciousness declaring that statement: "God is my Life, and nothing can separate me from God, who is my Life." It seems that those who witnessed the accident believed me to be lifeless.
While I was being taken to the next town my thoughts turned to the law of good, and a great sense of the promised peace enfolded me. When a practitioner was called over long distance, the first words of assurance given me were, "Nothing has ever touched your experience but good."
The following Monday I returned to my employment with an insurance company, and they took up the claim for adjustment. They requested a physical examination, and the X-ray pictures showed a broken back. The company making the settlement also requested X rays, because they could not believe it possible for me to be active in my employment if the pictures were correct. At least ten pictures were taken, all verifying the condition. The physical healing was entirely accomplished through Christian Science. At no time did I have any pain or loss of sleep, and the many hours of rest which seemed necessary were taken in the accustomed way on my back. I lost no time from my employment. The lost car and all expenses were covered in the settlement by the insurance company.
Early in this experience I seemed to have a great sense of resentment over discomfort when walking on uneven pavements, and to overcome the resentment I worked for protection. Shortly afterward, standing on a platform about a foot from the floor, I lost my balance and fell backwards. There was an instant of fear; then I realized that I was falling as gently as if a hand were supporting me. I fell to the floor flat on my back, but I got up with perfect ease, and there was no aftereffect.
I am very humbly grateful for the faithful work of the practitioner, and for this proof of the healing law of Christ. Healing is the operation of divine law, and flows through every Christian Science activity, thus fulfilling the promise of our Master, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
