Through experiences during the World War I lost all...
Through experiences during the World War I lost all faith in God, although I had a keen desire to understand, if possible, what and where God is.
One day a relative gave me a book, which I promised to read. It returned out to be the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The moment I commenced to read, I felt that here were the knowledge and wisdom I had been yearning for all my life. It revealed the divine Comforter to me.
I read the book every available moment, and the spiritual light was so uplifting that I realized I had been healed of the necessity for using glasses. In my continued search for Truth, I felt the need of overcoming the smoking and drinking habits. I worked to the best of my understanding to overcome these, but they seemed to get worse. One day, when I was indulging moderately, yet earnestly desiring to be free, I felt God's presence surrounding me and lifting me mentally out of the environment. I was instantly healed, and have never had the desire again. I walked out of the saloon free and joyous.
On another occasion my leg became sore and swollen. I asked help from a practitioner, but, although the pain was almost entirely overcome, the condition of the flesh became worse. When it was very acute it seemed as if evil spoke to me and ridiculed Christian Science, saying: "If you could not make your demonstration when the condition was insignificant, how do you expect to meet it now that it has spread from your ankle to your knee? It will spread all over your body and you will pass on." But instantly the voice of Truth spoke to me clearly, revealing to me eternal Life. I saw that it mattered not what the physical body expressed, evil had no power at all, because Life is eternal. Within a few days my leg was entirely normal.
For a period I was troubled with insomnia, which was eventually overcome with Christian Science help. I should also like to mention two beautiful experiences which helped me to obtain my freedom. I was suffering from exhaustion, and one day at business I felt I could not go on any longer. In my extremity I reached out to God for help. I was guided to study carefully the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. While I was doing so, the Golden Text (John 6:33) stood out very clearly to me, "For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world." It was instantly revealed to me that the bread of God is the Christ, Truth, which sustains our consciousness, enabling us to see man in God's image and likeness. Then came to thought a business associate with whom it had been difficult to work. When I was able to see his true being as God's idea, I was instantly free from fatigue. On another occasion a customer gave me and my staff a great deal of anxiety, and I sought Mind's guidance to show me how to deal with it in a Christlike way. I studied Science and Health, and the following passage was spiritually illumined to me (pp. 191, 192), "Mind, God, sends forth the aroma of Spirit, the atmosphere of intelligence." I realized that I, as God's child, expressed intelligence, and that I could not be fooled into believing a lie about man. This realization entirely healed the condition.
In conclusion, my heart is full of gratitude to our beloved Leader for her noble, self-sacrificing, and exemplary life. I am very grateful, too, for class instruction.
