Before learning of Christian Science I went through...

Before learning of Christian Science I went through years of worry, doubt, depression, and perplexity, during which I talked earnestly with many people and investigated various religions and philosophies, only to decide each time with more conviction, that "all is vanity." Then came the inspired textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I was very soon forced to acclaim Christian Science as furnishing the answer to all my questioning. I studied the textbook eagerly, and recognized that it was founded on Truth, whereas the systems which had disappointed me had been founded upon human hypotheses, and upon partly or wholly materialistic premises.

When my little daughter was four years old, she became gravely ill. She was not with me at the time, and the doctors, after taking blood tests and X rays, sentenced her to bed for three years. I brought her home, and called a Christian Science practitioner. I had lost faith in medical aid, but had not yet learned the rules of Christian Science and how to apply them, and I was terribly upset. The child grew alarmingly worse. Finally, as I turned again to the textbook, I found, on page 410, Mrs. Eddy's quotation from John, "'There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear. ... He that feareth is not made perfect in Love.'" I immediately saw how selfish, fearful, and binding my thinking had been, and I prayed simply and earnestly to reflect that perfect Love which is God. The child was instantaneously healed.

As I began to understand and to live Christian Science, and to place somewhat steadier footsteps on the path from sense to Soul, I began to understand what Life is, experienced greater harmony, and secured a much better position in business. For the first time in many years, I began to feel and express joy, and my disposition was greatly improved.

As increased strength was realized, greater demands came. Several times, when I was in isolated localities without access to a practitioner, I found it necessary to help my children or a friend. I knew "that God is no respecter of persons," and also, as Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 495), "God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God." And in each case, when my fears and feeling of inadequacy were calmed, the healing was accomplished. These have been inspiring proofs of the universal applicability of the law of God, good.

I cannot help feeling boundless gratitude to Mrs. Eddy when I recall my former attitude of hopeless agnosticism and consider my experience today, so full of blessings through the understanding of the healing truth that Christian Science has revealed.—(Mrs.) Martha D. Lawrence, Highland Park, Michigan.
