"Love currency"
Christian scientists are confronted with the question, "What is the great need in building and dedicating Christian Science churches?" That money is the chief need is a generally accepted belief. Mary Baker Eddy has written, however, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Our part, therefore, is to reflect Love, by expressing only those qualities that manifest the divine nature.
At the time of the building of the Extension of The Mother Church the members of that church lovingly contributed two million dollars for its erection. The contributions meant much sacrifice on the part of many, but they resulted in a grand achievement. Our Leader says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 13, 14), "Because Christian Scientists virtually pledged this munificent sum not only to my church but to Him who returns it unto them after many days, their loving giving has been blessed." And she adds farther on, "God will pour them out a blessing above the song of angels, beyond the ken of mortals—a blessing that two millions of love currency will bring to be discerned in the near future as a gleam of reality."
Love is power. The supply of Love is continuous; and it is never restricted. If we, individually, reflect Love and manifest it with unfaltering faith and confidence in its power, all needs of the church will be met. This is not the work of one member, nor of a few more advanced workers. It is the work of all the members. There should be unity of purpose, scientific thinking, manifested in daily living, a complete reliance upon Love and obedience to its divine guidance, and holy consecration. It is possible for each one to uplift his consciousness, to open his thought to Love, to hold steadfastly to it and prove it. What could be more inspiring and joyous than receiving and sharing this abundance of Love? What could be more fruitful than for each member to demonstrate it?
The man of God's creating freely reflects Love. Undoubtedly Jesus gave more generously of love than did anyone else. He knew his oneness with God, divine Love. He saw this unity for all those about him. Through his realization of ever-present Love he regenerated and healed those who sought his help. When bread or money was needed, supply was proved to be present and abundant. Mrs. Eddy depended upon Love, listening to it and obeying its divine guidance. After her discovery of Christian Science she wrote and gave the world the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She organized The Mother Church, established its government, and wrote the Church Manual. Our beloved Leader demonstrated the abundance of "love currency" to meet all these needs.
Mortal mind would put many obstructions in the way of individual demonstration. One of these is self-depreciation, and this would prevent some from doing the earnest work that they are capable of doing. It would suggest that others have greater understanding and are better fitted to do the work. Neither inferiority nor superiority has a place in God's kingdom. All of God's ideas reflect the one Mind, Love. All are endowed with ability to know Truth and to manifest it.
Apathy, indolence, and counterattractions would turn Scientists away from their work. The student who is filled with gratitude to God for Christ, Truth, for our Leader, and for a spiritual understanding of Church will not be indifferent or unwilling to give of his substance. Self-centeredness, egotism, pride, prejudice, and the tendency to criticize are false traits of personal sense that would put obstructions in his way. All these are opposed to unity and co-operation in the solving of church problems.
The abundance of "love currency" has been practically demonstrated many times. In one instance the members of a certain branch church struggled for years to raise the money required to pay off the indebtedness of the church. They thought of money. They talked of money. They worked earnestly but fruitlessly. Then an awakening came. They realized more clearly that God, divine Love, was indeed their supply, and that Love alone could meet their need. They turned wholeheartedly to Love. They thought and talked of Love. The result was that in a short time the amount needed came in. Not only was the debt lifted, but needed repairs were made, and the church was dedicated.
A Christian Scientist holding an important position of public service was confronted with a problem which, if solved, would benefit a large number of people. The Scientist turned to God for the solution, with complete reliance upon divine Love. An unfolding of the truth came so clearly and definitely that he was able to work out in accurate and minute detail the entire problem. The solution enriched the lives of many, and brought ample supply to all who benefited by it.
The abundance necessary for church building and dedication, as well as for individual supply, comes just to the extent that the members prove Love's presence. Supply exists eternally in God, in divine Love. As we study and ponder this truth, and let Love flood our consciousness and manifest itself in our daily living, our needs are met. This requires patience, perseverance, self-sacrifice, self-discipline, and consecration. Jesus gave us the rule which leads thought to the source of all supply—unlimited, immeasurable, inexhaustible Love. He said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
