Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
New Jersey.
Two radio criticisms of Christian Science came to our attention this year, and each was handled by the broadcasting station in a most satisfactory manner.
From a radio station comes this record of an almost instantaneous healing: "I had been suffering for a week with great pain in my right arm and shoulder, and had lost the use of my hand and arm. Most of the time was spent in bed and it was quite impossible to rise without help. On Friday afternoon, I asked to have the radio tuned in for the Christian Science broadcast. My younger daughter had such difficulty in setting the radio correctly that I finally got up from my bed, a thing I had not been able to do for a week, and putting on my robe and slippers, walked downstairs in time to hear the Scriptural and Science readings. I sat down in a chair, listening closely to every word, and it was not until my husband arrived home for dinner that I realized I had been healed of all pain and could move my arm. Complete healing was rapid and I am glad to tell you of it."
Many short letters and even postal cards reach this office telling of uplift and healings received and some send money to help carry on this religious radio work.
Denmark.
Only one misrepresentation appeared in the daily press during the year. A correction from this office was sent to the editor of the paper and printed in full.
A wonderful opportunity was offered this Committee to present before the Supreme Court of Denmark a substantial statement of the healing method of Christian Science. A couple was accused of "having exposed some patients to danger" by trying to heal them through prayer. The case had not the slightest connection with Christian Science healing; the attorney for the accused just wanted to bring before the court some instances of healing by prayer, and had chosen Christian Science and a few quotations from Dr. Carrel's book, "Man, The Unknown." The statement was read in full in the Supreme Court, and a number of Copenhagen papers printed the statement.
A new abridged edition of our greatest Danish encyclopaedia (Salmonsens Konversationsleksikon) was announced in the Danish papers. As the older editions contain a highly misleading definition of Christian Science, this Committee immediately went to see the editor, who told about a new, very short article on Christian Science which had already been prepared for the new abridged edition. A copy of this new definition was kindly promised this office and received a few days later. This being very unsatisfactory, your Committee again went to see the editor, and after some explanation a corrected definition was accepted and printed in the new edition.
A new popular edition of "Berlingske Tidendes Leksikon" (Encyclopaedia), entitled "Vor Tids Leksikon" (Encyclopaedia of Our Time), was published this year, and contained the full article on Christian Science prepared by your Committee a few years ago for the original edition.
Two lectures on Christian Science were given during the year. Both of the lectures were read in Danish translation from the platform directly before the delivery in English. The lectures were published in full in two weekly papers. The Copenhagen daily papers very kindly carried notices in the text, advertising our lectures. Both lectures were well attended and have proved a great blessing to our field.
