Obedience to Law Is Liberty
Doing what is right, true, and good, complying with the divine law, is obedience. Only through strict obedience to the rules of mathematics can one successfully work out a mathematical problem. The mathematician is obedient to the law of mathematics. Just as the application of mathematical truth corrects an error in computation, so the application of divine Truth corrects false mortal beliefs—sin, sickness, disease, unemployment, poverty, grief, death. We are freed from these as we gain the true understanding of God and man. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." As we are obedient to divine law, we find this promise fulfilled.
To see clearly the allness of God, the infinity of good, and the consequent unreality of evil leads to success in healing. Our beloved Leader, through her writings, has given us the rules for working out successfully any problem that may be presented to us. But if we are seeking the benefit of Christian Science, we must be obedient to her inspired directions.
Our Leader writes (ibid., p. 99): "Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Science has opened the door of the human understanding. None may pick the lock nor enter by some other door. The ordinary teachings are material and not spiritual. Christian Science teaches only that which is spiritual and divine, and not human." She has revealed to the world pure and unadulterated spiritual truth. As we are alert and realize the importance of studying the bible, our Leader's writings, and the authorized Christian Science literature, we shall progress in our passage from sense to Soul.
Members of an orchestra respond obediently to the direction of the conductor, and the result is harmonious. Should but one member decide not to follow the conductors direction, the result would be inharmonious. Only through the obedience of all the members can harmony be gained.
God, Spirit, created man in His image and likeness. Spiritual man, then, is God's reflection, the expression of divine Mind, infinite Love. God knows only harmony, goodness, and love; and man, His perfect reflection, is obedient to his creator, divine Principle. Inharmony of any kind is unknown to divine Mind. "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." What we see as error has no basis in divine Mind, and can be classified only as false belief. Whatever the problem, then, it can be solved harmoniously and intelligently through the understanding and application of the truth about God and man, as taught in Christian Science.
To realize the protection of Love we have only to be obedient to the law of Love. If we seem to lack protection, if we seem to be subject to error of any kind while doing what is right, it is not more protection we need, but more spiritual enlightenment. Obedience to Principle is the only way to salvation or spiritual-mindedness. The application of God's law destroys the error which would mislead us. Trouble disappears before obedience. We do not have to make mistakes in mathematics to progress; and it is the same in Christian Science. Consciously doing right is protection; and through understanding of and obedience to divine law we find liberty.
By loyal obedience to God's law, Christ Jesus realized and demonstrated his sonship with God. To those who follow the teachings of the Way-shower, as revealed to us in Christian Science, salvation from false beliefs is found and unity with God realized and demonstrated.
