Eighteen years ago we moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where my husband had accepted a position. When we left New York he had a slight cold, but gave it no attention, thinking it would pass away. After about a week it became worse. His friends in the office were quite concerned and one day advised him to go home. He telephoned to me, and when I met him he could scarcely breathe. I was frightened, for I had experienced pneumonia and knew the symptoms. Hitherto he had refused to have a doctor, but at this moment, when I said, "You must have a doctor," he agreed. Suddenly a clear voice said to me, "Why not try Christian Science?" I repeated the words aloud, "Why not try Christian Science?"
We knew nothing about it except that a cousin of mine and a few friends were studying it. My husband had heard of practitioners, and I remembered seeing a Christian Science Reading Room in one of the arcades which we discovered was near by. We found the Reading Room, and I told the attendant what we wanted to know. She gave us a copy of The Christian Science Journal, and since we were strangers in the city, she told us the names of two practitioners near our hotel. I selected one, and have thought many times since of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 254), "When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path."
When the practitioner opened the door to us we were both conscious of a feeling of joy and peace. I told her we knew nothing of Christian Science, but that my husband was sick and we had decided to try it. She said that we could do nothing better than turn to God. As she wanted to talk to my husband alone, I went into another room. In about an hour I heard him laugh. She called me in, and I certainly saw a new creature. He was breathing without any effort, and looked well and rested. I could not believe such a change possible and thought he was making a great effort to please the practitioner. At the time I knew nothing of an instantaneous healing, but that was what had occurred.
When we had left her house he said: "You may not believe this, but when that woman started to work for me, I drew the first full breath I have drawn in a week. I am entirely well." It was Wednesday night, and there was a branch church near our hotel, so we decided to attend a service.
The next morning my husband amazed his friends by walking into the office, a well man. From that time on we have relied on Christian Science for our every need, and it has never failed when its truths have been faithfully applied. I have been healed of spinal meningitis in ten days and of many other ailments. Supply has come to us at a time of need from unexpected sources. What I feel most grateful for, however, is the feeling of peace and protection which comes with the study of Christian Science. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
When that "still small voice" of Truth spoke to me, it seemed such a natural thing it did not surprise me until long afterward when I thought of it. I am so grateful that we were both ready to listen and be guided; also, for the great kindness of the Reading Room attendant and of the practitioner who so lovingly helped us to study and understand this great truth.
My gratitude is unbounded to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science, and for establishing all the activities of the movement. I am happy to be a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, and am grateful for class instruction and the great privilege of service.
(Mrs.) Helen A. Drew, Bronxville, New York.
I wish to verify the above testimony of my wife, and to express my gratitude for all the physical healings, and for a better understanding of God which I have gained through the study of Science and Health.—Leonard Drew.
