I have had the benefit of some understanding of Christian Science...
I have had the benefit of some understanding of Christian Science for a number of years, during which time my family and I have had many physical healings, have learned much-needed lessons, recovered lost articles, and, most important of all, have gained a realization of the necessity "for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds," as Mrs. Eddy says on page 4 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Several years ago, when my son was about seven years of age, I received a call from his teacher to come to the school because he was ill. When I arrived, I found the child suffering from a high fever, and I took him home. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and treatment asked for. The symptoms indicated malaria, which was thought to have been contracted during a recent vacation at a summer resort. For days the battle with error raged. At times the child rallied; then would relapse into a high fever, and become delirious. I became alarmed, because of certain complications, and entertained the fear of death. After several hours of mental anguish, I was able to rouse myself from my extreme sense of fear. As my thought became clearer, I was able to see that death could not really occur. I had a clear sense of ever-present and eternal Life, which is God, and which is reflected by man. Very shortly afterward the healing was accomplished, and there has never been a return of the condition.
I cannot express in words my gratitude for the practitioner who was so patient with me, and to whose work I give full credit for the unfoldment that took place in my thought, which was followed by a beautiful and complete healing.
Another experience which brought positive proof of the efficacy of Christian Science was that of recovering a sum of money which I lost while staying at a hotel.
Through the study of Christian Science I am learning to experience humility, joy, enthusiasm, and a constant renewal of inspiration. Also, I have been able to overcome a sense of timidity and nervousness, together with a somewhat unhappy disposition. All of these healings have brought me a deep sense of love and gratitude to God for having given Christian Science to the world, through that courageous and unselfish woman, Mary Baker Eddy, whose work made it possible for humanity to acquire a working knowledge of this practical and demonstrable religion.
On page 210 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy tells us: "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited." I am grateful that through a realization of the truth of that statement benefits have come to my loved ones.
I am grateful beyond expression for class instruction, for membership in The Mother Church, for the privilege of humble service in the branch church of which I am a member, and for the good that is coming to my son from his training in a Christian Science Sunday School.—(Mrs.) Maude Lennox Douglass, New Orleans, Louisiana.
