To express my deep gratitude for all that Christian Science...

To express my deep gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me, I should like to relate the following healing, which took place in 1914, in the hope that it will help others.

From childhood I had never felt well, and when I was grown up I had a severe attack of tubercular peritonitis. I was actually on the operating table for a serious operation, but at the last moment the surgeon desisted. He had promised my mother that if he saw a chance of my getting well without an operation, he would not perform one, and there appeared at the time to be that chance. After six months in bed, I gradually recovered, but was told that I should always have to be more or less careful.

Some years later, after I had married, I had another attack, which again kept me in bed for six months, and this was followed by another attack within the year, all due to the same trouble. The last one did not yield to the doctors' treatments as the former ones had done.

After we had seen several of the best specialists in London, it was decided that there was now no alternative and that I must have the operation, hitherto avoided. They said, though, that even if it were successful they could not guarantee that the disease would not break out in another form.

I was then ready to try Christian Science, which had previously been offered to me by an aunt and a cousin, but which I had not been willing to accept.

One day a doctor, who was not actually attending me, but who was a friend of my husband's, was talking to me about the operation I was to have. According to him there was nothing that could save me from it, and this distressed me very much. He then volunteered the information that a patient of his, who had been dying of consumption, was healed by Christian Science. He added that although he himself knew nothing about it, it might be worth my while to try it.

Christian Science treatment was then begun by a practitioner, but because I was still under the doctor, was taking drugs, and had a medical nurse, the slight improvement which took place did not last. Directly I tried to get up, the whole condition returned. The doctor attending me, who knew nothing of what I was doing, but who had been surprised and pleased at the improvement, then decided, upon the return of the condition, that I must now be taken to the sea to get strong enough for the operation. I was accordingly taken to Folkestone in an ambulance, but I managed to take with me a Christian Science nurse by asking to be allowed to change the one I had. After arriving at Folkestone, I seemed to get worse, and the new nurse said that I could not do two things, namely, have Christian Science as well as medical treatment. She assured me that if only I would place complete reliance on Truth, I would be healed, and she urged me to give up the drugs. I did not believe her, but made up my mind that I would rather die—as the doctor said I should if I gave up the drugs—than go on suffering as I was then doing.

One day, therefore, I stopped taking and using all drugs, fully expecting that my end had come; but to my utter surprise, I began to get well. In three days I was out in a Bath chair, and although I had been in bed for months, within a week I was walking out of doors. In a very short time I was strong and well, and I have had excellent health ever since.

I can never be grateful enough to Christian Science and to those who gave it to me, and whenever I think of that healing, I realize how important it is to obey Mrs. Eddy when she says (Science and Health, p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized."—(Lady) Marjorie A. Dalrymple Hamilton, Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland.
