My attention was first drawn to Christian Science in...
My attention was first drawn to Christian Science in the year 1898, through my efforts to help a friend who had been forced to give up business because of ill-health. When I called to see him one day at his home I was told that the doctors had given him only a few days longer to live. About two weeks later I was very much surprised to meet him on the street, and asked him for an explanation. He told me that there were people in the city who called themselves Christian Scientists, and that he was having treatment from a man known as a Christian Science practitioner, and was getting well again. Soon afterward he went back to work, fully recovered.
About the time this occurred, a young woman in our home was sick, and the doctor in attendance told me he could do nothing more for her. The same practitioner was asked to help the girl, and in a week's time she was well again. A short time later I had word that my sister-in-law, who lived in the country, was sick. I went to see her and learned that three doctors had given her up. She was brought to my home, and in one week was entirely well, through the work of the same practitioner.
All this led me to purchase a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and to study it. I was a member of an othodox church at the time, and was very much interested in church work. After studying Science and Health for a short time I decided I wanted to become a member of a Christian Science church. I resigned from the church of which I was a member, and joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and soon afterward became a member, also, of The Mother Church in Boston.
I am very thankful that I was led to take these steps. All this was at the beginning of my business life, when I was employed by boatbuilding boatbuilding company as a carpenter. Only a few months later the president of the company offered me a position as designer and master builder. I was very much surprised at this offer, and told the president that I had not the education necessary for that line of work. He insisted that I accept the job. I realized that Christian Science had opened the way for me, and I accepted the offer. About two weeks later the president came to me and said he was well satisfied with my work and that my pay would be raised. After I had served with that company for some seven years, the same president remarked that I was the best man he had ever had work for him. For this I give credit to Christian Science alone.
I have, also had several remarkable demonstrations of physical healing. I was healed of three broken toes and a broken rib without any medical assistance. I was also healed of injuries received when I fell from a ladder, striking my back against the edge of a two-inch plank and the back of my head against a concrete floor. When I regained consciousness I was told that a doctor had already been summoned and that he would arrive in a few minutes. Later I learned that the doctor's decision was that I could not live overnight. He took me to the hospital and X-rayed me, but when I realized what was occurring I asked to be taken home. This request was granted, and a student of Christian Science remained with me through the night. Five weeks later I was able to go back to my business.
Since taking up the study of Christian Science we have reared a family of three, without any help from doctors.
For all these blessings I am most truly grateful to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy.
