It is with a deep sense of gratitude and joy that I acknowledge...
It is with a deep sense of gratitude and joy that I acknowledge the physical freedom and spiritual illumination gained through the application of Christian Science to a problem which confronted me and held me captive several years ago.
My legs were badly drawn up, at that time, and the muscles of my back had lost their elasticity. Only with difficulty could I manage to get about on crutches. My regular physician had been consulted and had treated me for some time without beneficial effect. I turned to a chiropractor for help, but gained no relief. One day, my regular physician recommended that I go to Louisiana, where a convention of physicians and surgeons was shortly to be held. There I was to be submitted to an examination, with the hope that at least one of those present would recognize the difficulty and recommend treatment for healing.
Before I left for the convention, a friend who had learned of my plans told me of Christian Science and of its gracious healing of physical disorder. He asked me to promise, if the doctors did not heal me, to go to the local Christian Science Reading Room and borrow and read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It was an easy promise to make, and I made it.
I was in due time examined by several doctors. I was then sent back to the hospital, and thirty days later was informed that my case was a problem to them all. It was recommended that I submit to a surgical operation, which might release the tension and possibly thereby return my legs to a normal position. An assurance that this effect would follow the operation, however, was not given. In despair, I turned my face to my pillow and wept. Then I recalled my promise to try Christian Science and, like the prodigal son of old, who returned to his father's house, I arose, dressed myself, and sought the way to the Reading Room.
At the Christian Science Reading Room in that city I was asked if I believed that God could heal the sick. I said I believed that if God had ever had any power to heal the sick, He had never lost it. I was given Science and Health and took it home with me. While reading this book I experienced a lovely sense of comfort. I wondered if Christian Science was responsible for it. In prayer, I asked God to show me if I was on the right path. I had a night of complete rest, a comfort which I had not experienced for a long time. I slept the night through as softly as a child sleeps.
With the aid of a Christian Science practitioner, I soon found my freedom. In a few months, thanks to the faithfulness and love of this earnest Christian Scientist, I was a completely well man, normal in every way, and happier than I had ever been before. Former material desires and practices, such as gambling, vanished from my experience.
To God for His goodness; to Christ Jesus for his example of living the truth; and to Mrs. Eddy for her untiring and unselfish effort to bless all mankind with the practical understanding of this Science of Christianity; and to every student of Christian Science, especially those who have helped me on my way, I gladly give my heartfelt thanks.
