Man's Real Heritage

Christ Jesus not only said, "I and my Father are one," but after his resurrection he also said to Mary Magdalene, "Go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." This shows plainly that Jesus understood the universal nature of God's fatherhood. Additional proof of this lies in the fact that the Lord's Prayer is addressed to "Our Father which art in heaven."

On page 31 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes: "Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. He said: 'Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.'" And she continues: "We have no record of his calling any man by the name of father. He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and therefore as the Father of all."

Without doubt Jesus taught that God, his heavenly Father, being the creator of all reality, is the origin of the spiritual selfhood of all men. And Mrs. Eddy makes it plain in her writings that this divine Parent is not only the Father, but also the Mother of man. She says (ibid., p. 332), "FatherMother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation."
