The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Lubeck, Germany (Society).
Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Mrs. Adele Bahnke, who said:—
In the first epistle of John we read: "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." These wonderful words we have heard as children and as adults, but have we been able to apply them in times of inward stress or physical suffering? It is my privilege to bear grateful witness that through Christian Science, with which I became acquainted about fifteen years ago, and through Christian Science alone, has the spiritual significance of these words become clear to me.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 2): "God is Love. Can we ask Him to be more?" This eternal truth is just as practicable today as in the time of Christ Jesus, who manifested divine Love in his life and works. If we honestly and earnestly endeavor to keep our thought loving, we too can prove that inharmony disappears in the presence of Truth. Repeatedly in my experience I have had the privilege of finding this to be so. Chronic colds which were a great hindrance in my profession have been overcome; a severe manifestation of illness has been healed, and many other problems have been solved through the divine law which Christian Science explains.
This evening we all have the opportunity to broaden our spiritual understanding of Christian Science. Let us open wide our hearts, in order that we may receive the blessing.
Burley, Idaho (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Mrs. Marion A. Balch, who said:—
Christian Science has proved to me that God's law is one of progress. It found me greatly disturbed over material conditions, burdened with a sense of worry and fear, wondering if there were not some way in which our problems could be solved. Through the study of Christian Science I have gained better health, greater happiness and peace of mind, a clearer sense of supply, and the realization that all good is possible to man as God's reflection.
Christian Science is the Science of right thinking. When we keep our thoughts in accord with divine Mind, or God, we find our experience harmonious and good, but when wrong thinking enters into our mental home our outward experiences are less satisfactory. Through unfoldment of the truth about God and man we learn in Christian Science how to guard our mental home against any thought that is unlike God, and, consequently, how to dwell together in greater harmony.
Stockholm, Sweden (First Church).
Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Mrs. Lilly Carlsson, who said:—
We are assembled here tonight to hear of Christian Science, the wonderful revelation of Truth given us by Mary Baker Eddy. This religion is the Christianity that our Master, Christ Jesus, taught and lived, when he healed the sick, raised the dead, and preached the gospel to the poor in heart.
I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing. I came hungering and thirsting to find One whom I could know and understand, and who could be to me what the Bible says God is, "a very present help in trouble." And through Christian Science I found God. For in proportion to my sincerity in studying the Bible and our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I have found a peace which no words can express. Many times I have experienced healing from sickness through Christian Science, and have gained confidence and security since I have proved that God truly is "a very present help in trouble."
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Second Church).
Lecturer: Miss Florence Middaugh; introduced by Mrs. Jessie Corbett, who said:—
Christian Science came into my life at a time when I was very much in need of understanding and love. The first healing in our home was through reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This healing, which was of mastoiditis, has been permanent. After this, through the loving help of practitioners and my own study and application of the teachings of Christian Science, I was lifted out of sickness, lack, and wrong conditions into health and the consciousness of the infinite abundance of goodness and Love.
In the hour that is to follow, many spiritual truths will be given, and if you will take them home with you, make them your own, and put them into practice, you will be greatly blessed. What God has done for one, He will do for all.
