"How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things," says Paul in Romans. Christian Science was brought to my mother's attention for the second time, nearly twenty-eight years ago, through our prayers that she be healed of tuberculosis. The first time, when an aunt asked her to try it, she bitterly opposed it. Afterwards she moved to Colorado for her health. Then when this had not accomplished any good, and she was very close to passing on, she accepted Christian Science as a last resort. After much study and the help of a loving practitioner, she was healed, and realized her birthright of dominion. We were all so grateful to Mary Baker Eddy for showing us the Christ-way, that we immediately took up the study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy along with the Bible, which we already loved.
As a result of this healing, I had the privilege of many years in the Christian Science Sunday School, under loving teachers who lived close to God. My first healing, as a child, was the laying aside of two pairs of glasses, which had seemed very necessary. I also was healed of a stomach disorder, which had often kept me from school.
During the school term, I often camped in the mountains over week ends. On one of these occasions I was brought home very ill, and quickly became unconscious, in which state I remained for several hours. The family held to the truth about man's relation to God, and called a practitioner. After several hours I was healed. This appeared to have been tick fever, as a tick was found on my body. Again "God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit."
I have been healed of infected fingers, sties, pink eye. ringworm, boils, headaches, colds and sore throat, appendicitis, strained ligaments, and hives, the last through the knowledge that anger is not a God-quality. A cavity in a tooth was filled through the understanding of Truth. Over a year ago a seemingly impossible business problem was worked out for my husband through our knowing that God's blessings are infinite, impartial, and always available to man. Much resentment was eliminated through this demonstration. Many times pets have been healed through the power of Truth. On one occasion distemper was cured in three days.
What looked like a spider bite on the hand was healed. The physical manifestation was very ugly, and the hand was kept out of sight as much as possible. After I had worked on the problem for three or four days, it seemed necessary to call for help. A member of my family lovingly responded, and after two or three treatments all pain, swelling, and discoloration disappeared. A greater sense of humility was realized through this healing, because I had been afraid that the condition would keep me from a good position, instead of knowing that "it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
Several years ago I was beautifully healed of intestinal influenza. While this healing was going on, the healing of periodic cramps also took place. I had had treatment for this condition before, but it had yielded only temporarily, whereas at this time it was permanently healed.
At one time, through listening to the whispering of evil and materiality and letting evil seem real, bitterness, resentment, and self-condemnation crept into my consciousness, seeming to shunt out all the light. During this time a sense of apathy or mental laziness appeared to shut out all the good I had known. Self-pity made me desire to end it all. Help was asked for and lovingly given. The road marked "detour" is always a long one. After much prayer and striving and many weeks of patient, wise direction from a practitioner, whose advice was to go always to God and then to listen, true humility was gained, followed by gratitude to God, and regeneration, bringing the consciousness of the light again. A great deal of physical pain was cast out through this demonstration.
Now my only purpose is so to live that others may see the light and thus be helped to know the presence of the Christ. Only God knows the gratitude I feel for membership in The Mother Church, and in a branch church, and for class instruction. I am also very grateful for the periodicals, the Hymnal, the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, lectures, and Reading Rooms; for consecrated practitioners; and for many years of teaching in the Christian Science Sunday School.
