I have been a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church for a number of years, and have received rich blessings from the study and application of Christian Science. There is a verse in Psalms which reads, "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." This promise has been fulfilled many times in my experience. When I have lived up to my highest sense of right, as taught in Christian Science, unexpected good has come to me.

In the year 1931, I was employed in a position which I had held for several years. For some time I had felt that I had reached the limit of my capacity in the particular branch of work in which I was engaged. Another branch of the work attracted me, but I was reminded that we were in the depths of a terrible financial depression, and was told that I should be glad to have any position at all, and grateful to be so well established where I was. It was also pointed out that the work which I desired was hazardous and overcrowded. Whenever these and other arguments became too loud, I would try to remember that real progress is spiritual, and that I could be only where I would be most useful.

One day a large cut was made in my salary. On the way home that evening I spent some time contemplating a reduction in expenses. The suggestion came that I could cut the wages of my housemaid, who had been in my service for some time. Suddenly I realized that what I needed was a larger understanding of God's ever-available abundance, which was not subject to material conditions. I saw that if I cut the wages of this maid I would be adding to the world's belief of lack. Right then I decided that I would not pass along to another the belief in lack, but would try to make better use of such qualities as alertness and wisdom.

Within a few months my firm found it necessary to work with a skeleton force, and I was told that it would be necessary for me to leave by a given date. I was grateful for the thoughtfulness which my employer showed in giving me time to look for another place. Mrs. Eddy's statement (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 277), "No evidence before the material senses can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme," was a great inspiration to me at this time, and it acted as an armor against the arguments of unemployment, which were rampant during this time.

It would take too long to tell in detail the individual steps which unfolded during the next few days, but within a week I had an interview with one of the leading men in the particular field I wanted to enter. I was given a fine position in an executive capacity, at more money than I had ever made, and I left my old employer before my date of service had expired. I was told by my new employer that I had been chosen out of some ninety applicants because of my fresh point of view, which they thought would be valuable to the work in those trying times. This kind of work was usually taken under contract, but I asked for none, and kept the position for over two years, thus being able to establish myself in that field. I entered the new work without fear, knowing that I was demonstrating Christian Science, and that the power of Truth would enable me to carry the work through. I was encouraged by remembering Jesus' words, "I can of mine own self do nothing." When my work in that place was finished, I was led to another fine position in the same branch of the work.

This is but one of a series of experiences I have had as the result of trying to live up to the teachings of Christian Science as given to us by Mrs. Eddy.

I cannot close this testimony without expressing great gratitude for the inspiration gained from all the avenues provided for growth in the study of Christian Science, such as class instruction, church membership, service on church committees and in the Sunday school, our lectures, periodicals, and, above all, the writings of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. I also have a great appreciation for every tried and loyal worker in the Christian Science vineyard who has kept his light aglow.
