Sincere appreciation of the testimonies given in our...

Sincere appreciation of the testimonies given in our periodicals impels me to add my song of praise. Our first contact with Christian Science came about eighteen years ago, when we were eager to have our small son attend Sunday school. Having no church interests of our own, we sent him to various Sunday schools and finally decided we should like to have him grow up with the teachings of Christian Science. We soon realized that to have him benefit from this teaching we must supplement it by home training along the same line, so my husband and I applied ourselves earnestly to learning what it was all about. From the beginning of our study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we knew that we had made a wise choice for our son, and felt sure that, if it was good for him, it would be good for us. How grateful we have been ever since, that Christian Science came to us when it did!

Life, so called, had been rather a pleasant, easy-going experience; but as our family grew, the years brought problems, physical, financial, and moral. The truths learned in Christian Science have been adequate to meet every need as it arose, when we honestly and sincerely applied them to reverse the error. The Apostle Paul writes in II Corinthians, "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair." We were often "troubled on every side," but looking back over many of these experiences, I realize, with gratitude and joy, that we were never in despair, knowing that we had a very present help, and could set ourselves to work out the problem with that assurance. This made the work of rearing four boys not a distressing task, but, instead, an interesting experience.

Above all other things that Christian Science has taught me, I am most grateful that I am learning "a truer sense of Love," as mentioned on page 19 of the textbook. The practical application of this "truer sense of Love" was proved to me in the following experience. I had been much disturbed by the fast-moving traffic on the highway in front of our home, just on the edge of the town, where the traffic restrictions seemed to be disregarded, for our boys had to use this highway to go to school, there being no sidewalks in that section. I soon realized that my wrong thinking about those who were driving with apparently no regard for law, was not protecting the boys. I endeavored to see that no child of God could be careless or do any harm. I had for some time been free of any resentment toward the drivers of these cars, when this test came upon me. Our young son was hit by a fast-moving car, which dragged him about a hundred yards before it could be stopped. I often recall with joy the divine presence that enabled me to go to the man who felt responsible for the accident and was so distressed by his seeming error, and to be able to take his hand, with a true sense of compassion, and assure him that all was well with the child.

In the meantime my husband had carried the boy into the house, followed by many who witnessed the accident, and who insisted that the boy should be taken to the hospital. We had never before called on a Christian Science practitioner in that town and did not know any personally. While I was going to the telephone to call one who came to my thought, I found my husband already talking to this same person, although we had never spoken of her before in the relation of practitioner, nor had there at this time been a word exchanged between us. The sense of love, confidence, and harmony which prevailed during the experience brought about what to the human mind was indeed a miraculous healing, for within twenty-four hours the boy joined with his companions in all their normal activities. So complete has been the healing that in the years which have passed he has never referred to the experience.

It is not difficult for anyone to understand why we and all Christian Scientists revere our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, when it is realized, in the light of an experience like this, that without her consecrated effort the world might still be groping for the right understanding of Love which Jesus taught would free mankind from the law of sin, disease, and death.—(Mrs.) Albertina E. Yaeger, West Hartford Connecticut.

With deep gratitude, I corroborate my wife's testimony, and add that so profound was the effect of this experience and so intimate was the healing presence, that it seemed impossible ever to talk to anyone about it. It brought a glimpse of what those near to Jesus must have felt when witnessing his wonderful healings, and of Mary's thought, when she "kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart."—Harry C. Yaeger.
