It is with a feeling of deep gratitude to God; to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science, and to the practitioners and friends who have unselfishly aided me, that I give this testimony of a Christian Science healing.
In my youth I attended an orthodox church and Sunday school. As soon as I left the home of my parents, I discontinued attending any church. Shortly thereafter I became interested in free thought, and for the next several years studied the Bible conscientiously.
During this period I developed an acute stomach condition, which was diagnosed by several physicians as a very severe case of ulcers. I suffered much, even though I was on strict diets, could work but little, lost weight, and could not use my car because of fainting spells. My future outlook on life was anything but pleasant.
While trying to walk to a streetcar one day, I became nauseated. A friend, whom I knew to be a Christian Scientist, found me in a weakened condition and asked me if he could help me. I told him that I should like to be put on a certain streetcar, and he offered to take me home in his automobile, if I would come into a near-by building with him for a moment. When we left the building elevator, I noted the initials "C. S." following the name on the door, and revolted at the thought that he might be trying to force his religion upon me. Not knowing that my friend had an engagement with the practitioner, I spoke up and said that I was there without my consent, that I did not believe in their religion. The practitioner's reply was kind. So I asked him how mental treatment could affect my stomach, and what was required of me. He said that the only requirement was that I submit to the treatment. So he worked for perhaps fifteen minutes, then asked me to go to my home and eat whatever I desired, and not to fear that it could harm me. I felt no relief from my discomfort and told him so. I was anything but impressed or grateful for his efforts and left without thanking him.
After leaving his office, I rejected my friend's offer of a ride home, and to disprove the whole matter, I purchased all the necessaries for a steak dinner. My wife was astounded at the food I had bought, but as she had attended a Christian Science church a few times, when told of my visit to the practitioner, she seemed to understand that I should do as I was told, and she proceeded to cook the dinner. Notwithstanding my spiteful thought, I enjoyed the meal without having the slightest evidence of discomfort or aftereffects. I had the first good night's sleep in many months, and, during the fourteen years since then, I have never felt unfavorable effects from any food taken. I regained my weight and was fully restored to health, which I have enjoyed without serious interruption to this date. You can appreciate my changed attitude upon my next visit to the practitioner who had borne with me so tactfully, and who had reflected divine Principle so clearly that the error, which seemed so real to me, had been instantly annulled.
I am grateful to know that there is one omnipotent God, and that the understanding of this truth does meet every need of humanity.
For class instruction, membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, the periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor, and all the activities of the Christian Science movement, I am increasingly grateful; and while it is still necessary to master the many claims of mortal mind, I rejoice in the fact that Mrs. Eddy has provided us with positive proof that nothing unlike God is real or has any power.—Roy N. Miner, Austin, Minnesota.
I wish to verify the statements made in my husband's testimony. We have enjoyed many blessings through the study of Christian Science, and I am grateful for all the activities of the movement.—(Mrs.) Violette L. Miner.
