God's Likeness Never Dreams

How grateful many a one has felt upon awakening from some unhappy or terrifying night dream to realize that it was only a dream, that no such illusive events actually happened, that he was still free and protected from whatever dangers the dream had threatened! The dream experience soon vanished from thought as he went about his daily duties, and he felt no hurt from the experience.

If one is a student of Christian Science, he recalls with gratitude a question put by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 250), "Now I ask, Is there any more reality in the waking dream of mortal existence than in the sleeping dream?" Ah, the student thinks, if one could as quickly throw off "the waking dream of mortal existence"! But it seems so real, the senses argue. And yet does not the night dream seem very real at the time the dreamer is experiencing it? Must not the dissolving of this mortal dream come as does release from the night dream, namely, through awakening?

The Bible says, "Awake thou that sleepest, and ... Christ shall give thee light." But how is this to be accomplished? One may ask, Just how can I awaken from the unhappy day dream? Here Christian Science comes to the troubled thought with its message of healing and makes plain the difference between God's man and mortal man, alias the Adam-dream. Christian Science brings to the troubled thought the knowledge that whatever is not of God is not true, since God, good, made all that was made and pronounced it "very good."
