[Original testimony in German]

I first heard of Christian Science in 1915, and for about...

I first heard of Christian Science in 1915, and for about three months I attended the Sunday services and Wednesday evening meetings. At that time I was able to testify with deep gratitude to the healing of headeches of many years' standing. Later I was suddenly taken ill with appendicitis. I asked the relatives with whom I lived to send for a Christian Science practitioner. They did not accede to my request, however, for they were opposed to Christian Science, and a doctor was called. I had to undergo two severe operations within a year. I always had my textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, with me, and although at that time my understanding was small, still it was sufficient to make it possible for me to rise again after this seeming defeat.

Then I unfortunately strayed from Christian Science and later had to acknowledge the truth of the words of our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 569), "Alas for those who break faith with divine Science"!

In the year 1920 I was afficted with suppuration of the pelvic parenchyma. I had to lie in bed at home or in hospitals for months, and had to submit to many kinds of medical treatment. An operation was no longer possible, nor would I have allowed one, for I was possessed with the thought that I should die if I did. The various doctors were at a loss with regard to my disease.

In this extremity, when all material means had failed, my attention was again called to Christian Science. This time I was ready, and I clung to God as my last resort and only help. Practitioners worked for me with great love and patience until the organs gradually began to function harmoniously and I was gradually began The long journey which I had had to take through the wilderness was very salutary, for during that time many faults of character, were as resentment, bitterness, impatience, and irritability, were overcome.

In a marvelous way, in which I clearly recognized divine guidance, I was led in 1924 out of my circle of relatives and friends into a city which I had not known up to that time. Here I had the opportunity to devote my entire time to the study of Christian Science.

I am unspeakably grateful for the transformation of my life, for the patient, loving work of practitioners, for membership in The Mother Church, for the rich blessing of class instruction, for the privilege of serving our beloved Cause, and helping others as I was helped.

Only he who is studying earnestly, daily, can fully appreciate what treasures are contained in the articles in the German edition of The Herald of Christian Science; what the study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly yields; or what our revered, God-inspired Leader had given to humanity through her textbook, for by it the Holy Scriptures are at last explained correctly. It would not be possible to enumerate all the blessings that I have received during all these years.
